talk to me about more cyphers if you're up for it, you know I love this shit. ovi vs mpreg vs regular preg? or dubcon as a general theme? or abo as scary gender roles, but safe to explore? or a topic of your choosing lol
motherfucker you already know all my hot takes on this shit XD
Ovi vs mpreg vs preg. I have a LOT to say on this topic since I’ve dabbled quite a bit in it.
I should start with saying I am a weirdo and I do not actually like the distinction between mpreg and preg at all, and the treatment of one as Hilarious and the other as Horror just. Eh. Miss me on it. The last time I wrote “mpreg” was in Borderlands fandom and I just tagged it Pregnancy. Probably because the gender essentialism of the concept is my fucking least favorite part of it.
I’ve been writing oviposition (for laymens: egg-laying) for a Fucking While Now. I got into it from outside fandom erotica but kinkmeme stuff was what super got me into it. I think the first story i wrote with it was in 2013 if I’m looking at the AO3 right.
Oviposition is very often held up as a Fucking Weird Kink, but from experience I can tell you a lot of people enjoy it. I would consider it a Mid Tier kink more than anything. It has a lot of interesting intersections of concepts, so it’s sort of like.... yanno.... there’s something for everyone when eggs are involved.
If you like pregnancy/breeding, but human babies scare you? Oviposition. If you like the concept of being made use of by something? Oviposition. If you dig being attracted to The Other (magical, alien, whatever)? Oviposition. While many many many people, esp ppl with wombs, have a deep fucking fear of having to use those wombs IRL, oviposition taps into a lot of adjacent desires. There’s also elements of body modification, and situationally there’s stuffing/inflation, immobility, or if you want even veering into Erotic Horror, which we all know is a popular jam.
For me, it’s probably related to what I’m discovering is a Core Kink for me: body modification and not dehumanization but exploring being something outside/beyond human.
In TWYCC (spoilers) the main protagonist gets egged up by his frogboy boyfriend, and it has some elements of fear to it, but more than anything it’s a way for this character who has already been ostracized by his human society to be touched by something else, to be given in a very manifest way a hint of a new life. (geddit? literalism in symbolism, oh snap)
Oviposition can be “i like big eggs and i cannot lie” and it can be “i want lingering consequences” and it can be a metaphor for our relationship with out humanity. It’s an EXTREMELY versatile kink and I have written it like..... three or four times now? and if inspiration strikes me, I shall again.
So lets pivot to preg and I’m gonna keep talking about myself and wrap it up in the ABO thing. Pregnancy kinks also come in a few varieties. Some I cannot touch myself because it’s a squick for me, but a lot of them I can. Pregnancy kink that perfectly emulates how fucking terrible and scary IRL pregnancy does nothing for me personally and I cannot engage with it because it’s essentially a horror story, and not a sexy one.
However, taking a step to the left reveals a hall of mirrors of what pregnancy kink can reflect in the safety of fiction.
There is sometimes the erotic horror of loss of bodily control, which has intriguing similarities to mind control and body mod, honestly. There’s also the same “being made useful” kink from ovi. There is, of course, always, inflation. You cannot escape inflation.
I think when talking about pregnancy there is a clear break for most people. There’s the eroticization of the pregnancy....... and there’s stories that deal with the aftermath. The latter of which are, in amateur erotica and in fandom, staggeringly more rare. My god we do not want to write or read about children, huh.
I have, funnily enough. Or, offspring at least, not always human per se, lets not be squares about it. But I notice a pattern every time I let a story go beyond the egg laying or the pregnancy finishing up. In every instance, the “normal” environment for raising offspring is absent.
In one story, there’s an alien society that flat out does not raise children in small family units but in big communes with experts on hand to care for the kids. In another, the “kids” are magical tadpoles who will be raised by a decent group of people (one of whom is a fucking telepathic god). And in another, they offspring are straight up weird alien things who will float away and do weird alien things.
Now, similarly, in my WTNV ABO story, omegas are still the endotype that can get pregnant, but the entire society is structured with larger family units (sorties) and there are a lot of safeguards against accidents.
I’ve had a lot of experience writing these things, and I can tell you............ Children But Without The Nuclear Family Structure is a fucking kink. People eat that shit up. Oh baby, you wanna thrill your readers? Sit down and come up with a system that alleviates/diversifies the pressure of keeping helpless miniature humans alive. Goddamn.
It’s actually both funny and sad to me, how positive a response that kind of thing gets. I don’t know if I would go so far as to say it’s not pregnancy ppl are squeamish of, but of the consequences our society puts on in, but I will say that for some people, that is the damage to navigate.
