Because the world needs another mommy blog /sarcasm
My toddler loves her some Sesame Street, so I’ve decided to try to steal at least one Sesame Street hour a week for writing. We’ll see how this goes as it’s by no means uninterrupted time. For instance, I just had to remind her “Cold Elmo” doesn’t go in the mouth. She slammed her finger in the drawer earlier, so she’s holding onto a boo-boo buddy.
I feel a little bad about letting her watch TV. I don’t trick myself into believing she can learn from TV. She does pick up words and can certainly identify Muppets, but real learning takes some involvement. She loves watching Baby Signing Time videos, but she has a huge sign language vocabulary because we went to a class and I’ve been proactive at teaching her signs.
Related to BST (as we parents call Baby Signing Time, Toddler calls it “Baby!”), she also loves Potty Time. It’s a sign language potty training program. We watch the video and sing the songs, but so far there’s not much progress in the potty department.
We had a go at the potty this morning, in fact. It involved me checking her diaper to ensure it was clean, then suggesting we go sit on the potty. She was enthusiastic and proclaimed, “Poop!” By the time we made it to the bathroom and I removed her diaper, she had squeezed out the tiniest turd I’ve ever seen. It was as if she took my recommendation as an immediate command and tried to comply as best she could.
Our potty score is something like this:
Mom: 0
Toddler: All the points
And thus the name of this blog. Motherhood can seem like a string of failures sometimes. Especially when you’re in a “mommy bubble”: either at home on your own or surrounded by other parents who are better at shining turds (and receive them in potties rather than diapers). Failing is inevitable on every path in life, but the key is to learn and parlay mistakes into success, i.e. “fail up.” And to not screw up in big, irrevocable ways. ‘Cuz you can’t fix some shit.
