Introduction Part 2
“Caitlin, are you guys okay?” Barry asked as he walked into the Cortex. Caitlin was patching up a small cut on Jay’s forehead, but for having the van flipped, they were in great condition.
Jay looked to Barry as Caitlin finished. “I’m sorry Barry, Dr. Light’s never killed before, I thought we could reason with her.”
“You cannot reason with someone under Zoom’s influence, and now a man is dead because of you, Garrick.” Wells yelled. “This whole thing is because of you. He doubts himself, because of you, but believe me, Barry can do what you could not. Barry can stop Zoom!”
“I spent two years hunting Zoom.” Jay defended himself.
“Wrong!” Wells said loudly, elongating the ‘o’ as if arguing with a child. “Zoom. Hunted. You! You spent the last two years of your life running, running, running from Zoom.”
“Zoom would have killed me just like he will kill Barry if you lead him down this path!” Jay yelled back.
“No, because he is not like you. Barry runs towards danger, not from it,” The air was tense, and Becky could tell Ultimate Non-Meta Smack-Down was only seconds away from happening if someone didn’t do something to defuse the bomb between the two men.
Wells finished his earlier thought in a quiet voice, which only made it worse. “Because Barry’s not a coward.”
And the bomb went off. Jay punched Wells in the face, knocking him back into the desk railing, which Wells pushed off of and flung his body weight into his swing at Jay. Wells got a couple of hits to Jay’s midsection before Jay blocked with list left arm and gave the same treatment to Wells.
Barry just looked done with everything, Caitlin and Cisco couldn’t take their eyes off the fight, wincing with each blow landed.
Finally Barry intervened, flashing between the two men and separating them. “Enough!” Both men dropped their arms with angry huffs, and Wells walked out into the hall to finish calming down. Barry looked to the three other’s in the room and gestured it’s his head to let them know to talk to Jay while he followed Wells.
Once Barry was gone, Jay took a deep breath as he raked his hands through his hair. Caitlin walked up to him and put a comforting hand on his arm. “He had no right to say that to you, Jay. Right Becky?” Jay looked over to the woman Caitlin looked to, fully registering there was someone else in the Cortex. She had been so quiet and still that his mind had passed right over her.
“Not a coward. He runs, but not a coward.” She said it with such certainty that Jay wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
“Remember, Becky, full sentences. Who’s not a coward?” Caitlin asked like she was talking to a child. Jay looked At Caitlin with his brow raised, seeing as the woman her age, if not a little bit older.
“Jay. Jay is not a coward. He can run like Barry.” Jay’s eyes widened. How did she know?
“Yes, he used to run like Barry.” Caitlin said. She turned to him, “If she had been here when you first arrived, we would have known immediately that you were telling the truth.”
That gave Jay pause. “Why is that? How did she know I was a speedster?”
Cisco was the one to answer. “She’s like the Ancient Greek oracles who could see things. When out in the field, we call her Delphi!”
“So, you see things?” Jay asked cautiously, as she continued to stare at him.
“Not exactly. It’s not really ‘see’. I just know things. I don’t know how, and sometimes it doesn’t make sense, but I just do.” She explained, her hands nervously playing with the hem of her shirt.
“So, what else do you see?” Jay asked, mentally preparing what to do if she could see what he was really doing.
“You’re nervous, worried, angry, ready to run.” She stated.
“You’re probably nervous about her reading your mind – she can’t. Worried about Barry, and angry with Wells.” Caitlin explained.
“So it’s more, translating emotions?” Jay looked between the three.
“Probably. Even the previous Dr. Wells wasn’t sure what she did or how she’s able to do it.”
Jay held out his hand to Becky, “Well, it’s nice to meet you. Your name’s Rebecca, right?”
“Cisco likes to call me Delphi. Caitlin likes to call me Rebecca. Barry likes to call me Becky. Dr. Wells liked to call me Ms. Taylor. What do you like to be called?”
“Just Jay, Ms. Taylor. Is it okay if I call you Rebecca?”
“You can call me Rebecca, Just Jay.” Becky smiled, and Caitlin and Cisco burst out laughing.
“She takes almost everything literally, Jay.” Caitlin laughed.
Jay took his hand back and laughed quietly, “Just call me Jay, Rebecca.”
“Jay.” She repeated. “Ok.”
Becky’s smile fell to a frown as her eyes seemed to unfocused. “You’re going to hurt Caitlin, worse than Ronny or Dr. Wells, but part of you can fix it.”
The air filled with unspoken questions, Jay looking to Caitlin and Cisco for answers, and the two looking to each other. Becky’s phone dinged, breaking the tension, and she stood up, “I need to go. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Like she hadn’t spoken before. There was no urgency in her voice, she was just stating a fact.
“It was nice to meet you.” Jay nodded to her with a smile. She smiled back as she left.
“Jitters! Tomorrow! 9:30!” Cisco happy called after her as she left the Cortex.
“She’s a bit… Strange.” Jay said, not in a mean way,it as an observation.
Cisco raise his eyebrow at him. “Say the man who could run as fast as lightning but can’t because another person who can run as fast as lightning stole your speed, and threw you to another universe?”
