May I say that some time I feel like people put Rin and Kagura in competition for some best-at-changing-Sesshōmaru's-heart award and that to me all this seems utterly ridiculous? Apart from any sessrin-nonsense, both Rin and Kagura are important, I mean, it's like you wanted a man to choose between his daughter and his wife, come on!
(I know Kagura is not his wife, they are not even lovers, but I know you know what I'm trying to say).
I was too bored last night and decided to torture myself watching yashajime.
and i thought: well i hate yashajime too much but i dont even remember half of the stuff that happened so why not revisit it
oh man ... it is actually that bad
under the cut my review of the first 3 eps
The first ep is good. Its the animated epilogue of Inuyasha, and you can tell that was written by Rumiko.
The character interactions are beautiful. All of them act accordantly to all the grow and maturity they had at the end of the series, its never a step back on the character development and i appreciate it. Miroku never touches someone else's butt, Inuyasha and Kagome dont get into a stupid fight and they actually talk abt their problems, and over all you can tell everyone has grown up to this point.
i haven't read the manga version of the epilogue so idk if this actually happened (bc i wouldnt be surprised if Sunrise decided to include this just for drama) but there's a lot of mentions of Kikyo and she feels like a hunting ghost all throughout the ep and i personally dont like that they still involve her even after all the time that has pasted since her death. yes she was one of the most important characters and we wouldnt have Inuyasha without her but cant she just rest in peace?
so this becomes a small problem between Inuyasha and Kagome. Inuyasha feels uncomfortable w the mention of her and is scared that Kagome will get mad at him for getting Kikyo involved on this, Kagome feels that Inuyasha is hiding stuff from her and just wants him to trust her a little more. and i think its more than normal that the whole Kikyo situation still a little taboo between them but i rlly liked that none of them felt insecure abt their relationship bc of this
And our favorite married couple resolves this TALKING. THEY USE WORDS AND COMMUNICATE AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM. NO YELLING. NO MAKING EACH OTHER FEEL BAD. NO ABUSE OF THE SIT COMMAND (well there is a sit that is just there to check the box but its not even Kagome yelling at him or anything. it feels more like "alright on the script says 'u have to sit Inuyasha at least once in the ep' so lets just get it done")
u can tell that Rumiko cooked in there.
Look at them they were born for each other <3333
And thats it. thats the best yashajime is going to get.
Eps 2 and 3 are just the introduction to the protagonist and introduction to the conflicts??? but its more like a bunch of information they r trying to force down ur throat. the only conflict i actually care abt is wtf happened to their parents
on those two eps they introduce us with 8 different conflicts (yes i counted them) not including all the new characters. IN TWO EPS. I SWEAR TO GOD I DIDNT REMEBER HALF OF THAT AT THE END OF THE EP, I HAD TO GO BACK AND WATCH SOME PARTS AGAIN BC IT WAS TOO MUCH
and i get that this series is going to be way shorter than Inuyasha, therefore they need to introduce everything quicker, but Sunrise that was a little too much.
Honestly i would have preferred that they didnt animate the epilogue if that was going to give them more time to present us the characters.
which leads me to my second point THE FUCKING CHARACTES. there is not a single one of them that i like (not even my baby girl Moroha)
Towa: I have the most problems with her. U are telling me that she is having a hard time in the modern era bc she is a hanyo and she is always getting into fights, fights that she is actively picking on, and she cant use her powers. but those problems (im sorry if this sounds bad) look like nothing to me. She is the one getting in trouble and she decides to get into those fights. its not like Inuyasha where we see him being bullied for doing nothing, just bc he looked and was different. and this is something that also bothers me, i dont see a reason why towa would get bullied theres nothing on her appearance that would indicate she is not human. no ear no nothing different, the white hair will just make her one of the cool kids.
Now her powers, OH MY FUCKING GOD SUNRISE WTF IS WRONG W U
u r telling me that she never had the necessity to actually use her powers and all that she did was jump fences and punch bad guys AND SHE IS ABLE TO CREATE A SWORD OF HER OWN USING HER YOUKAI ENERGY ?!?!?!
yes she is the daughter of the great lord Sesshomaru but NOT EVEN HIM WAS ABLE TO DO THAT UNTIL THE END OF THE SERIES. HE GETS BAKUSAIGA AFTER CENTURIES OF USING HIS POWERS AND TOWA WHO ONLY JUMPED FENCES CAN DO IT. not even Setsuna who has an actual training and does use her powers can do that.
Setsuna: she is just a copy paste of Sesshomaru, she doesnt have her own personality.
Moroha: Sunrise writers asked chat gpt "inuyasha's personality" and they got something like "inmature, impulsive, cocky" and just went w it but up to 100.
Yes Sunrise even though she is covered in red from head to toe i can definitely tell that she is Inuyasha's daughter no need to make her "female Inuyasha". Her entire personality is "more immature and childish Inuyasha", yes Inuyasha was immature and could be childish from time to time BUT NOT LIKE THIS. and not even the argument of " well she is younger and probably Inuyasha was like this when he was her age" can be used bc she is 14 and when Inuyasha was sealed to the tree he was 15. she grew up alone, in the Sengoku period where there was constante wars all the time, and she could even relate to the hanyos AND SHE IS THIS STUPID
Moroha is way better in the fanfics
Mei is insufferable, and u seriously r trying to convince my that Hisui and Kohaku dont know who Moroha and Setsuna r?
the only good things were the music, Kaoru Wada is simply a genius, and the character design which is pretty good.
but thats it. and genuinely tried to not be so harsh on it but its actually as bad as i remember it
The lack of care given towards Kikyo in the InuYasha fandom is sad. SHE'S SUCH A COOL CHARACTER TO BE ONLY AN AFTER THOUGHT.
That flashback scene when Kikyo got resurrected is what got me big time. The fucking "You hide your humanity, just like I must." And the damn "No, I suppose... You're not." LIKE MOTHERFUCKER, AUGHEJIEURJEJD.
I must sound insane to someone outside the fandom but seriously, there is so many cool parts with her, and the dilemea she poses for Inuyasha too. There's the part where she's getting exorcised, and the little girl who spying watches her favorite person, a high priestest, kill one of her OWN DAMN ORDER, BECAUSE HE TRIED TO EXORCISE HER BECAUSE SHE'S A FUCKING WANDERING SOUL. That scene is so cool, even how the priest showed nothing but sympathy and despair for Kikyo.
The scene where she tries dragging InuYasha to Hell with her with a kiss but he's only saved because he heard Kagome's distress? Imagine Kagome and InuYasha's relationship if that scene never happened.
THE FACT SHE IS THE ONLY REASON NARAKU EXISTS, THE WHOLE SUBTERFUGE THAT HAPPENED RIGHT BEFORE THEIR DEATH, THE FACT THAT (at least at book 5 this is my understanding) SHE CAN'T MOVE ONTO THE NEXT REALM AT ALL, BECAUSE SHE'S A MIRROR OPPOSITE OF INUYASHA'S DILEMEA.
Seriously!
Just like how Inuyasha is tied on the use of the Shikon Jewel because of Kagome and Kikyo, whether to use it to turn human or demon, she is tied on how to move on. She says, just like how InuYasha says he wants to turn into a full demon, she wants to kill InuYasha, but inwardly, she doesn't. The only time she came close would've sent her to Hell an unhappy, impure soul (referencing the kiss ofc.) She also can't fall back in love with InuYasha because, she's a dead woman. Plus, he's into Kagome now, she recognizes their bond.
What is she to do? She's aimless, and hates what she is. She was a priestest! She used to abjure her kind. Now, she does the exact thing she hated demons for, feasting on the souls of the dead to keep living. And for what? "To kill InuYasha!" She realizes she's lying to herself.
Even if she comes back to life, further in the manga, which there seems to be hints at (tenseiga, her giving naraku the shikon jewel, yada yada,) i feel more attention could be drawn to those aspects of her. Anyways, enough fanboying. Kikyo is based, anyone who disagrees will be sent anthrax.
alright, i may have posted this before, but why the hell is inuyasha just named "dog demon?" His name is literally
Inu = Dog
Yasha = (type of Buddhist/Hindu) Demon
To be fair, the name does kinda go hard after I looked up what type of demon a Yasha is (or Yaksha?) According to this one site (legit just yokai dot com, be warned I did not fact check this for accuracy,) in Hinduism they are just benevolent protectors of nature, but in Buddhism they were initially demons who preyed on travelers, but gave up their ways after hearing the sermons of the Buddha, instead deciding to serve the Buddha and protect the Earth. Apparently they are also a decorum on one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" of Buddhism's armor, Bishamonten specifically. Alongside this, this Heavenly King is typically depicted crushing a tiny, still-evil yasha under his foot, both of these converging to show the yasha as a symbol of virtue overcoming wickedness.
Kinda really fucking cool when you consider that Inuyasha is literally a demon who initially (kinda sorta) only works for his own selfish desire to become a full demon and become more powerful, before converting his path after meeting a mystical figure( Kagome (love is mystical bitches, )) deciding instead to serve the Earth and protect it from the evils of other demons.
I think that we tend to use the argument that Kagome was the best option for Inuyasha because she always accepted him as a half demon, and what Kikyo really wanted was just to turn him into a human (also disappearing the jewel in the process)
But she was told her entire life that her mission was to eradicate demons. THAT WAS HER LITERAL JOB and for her to fall in love w a half demon must have been terrifying at the moment. Think abt it, ur job is to exterminate demons and you not only find someone that has a closer life experience to yours than any other human will ever have, but you find yourself wanting a future with them.
And lets not get started on the social connotations that this would bring. Kikyo the most powerful priestess of the region. The strong and unstop-able Kikyo ... marring a half demon?
It's said that it was basically her fault that her powers got weaker and bc of that Naraku was born.
Because she felt in love with a half demon
So it makes sense that Kikyo wanted Inuyasha to become human so they could be together in peace. Also, through Kikyo's eyes, she was helping Inuyasha end that painful life he had prior to meeting her. He was going to have a more stable life without fighting and worrying about surviving and just start living.
Yes Kagome loved him just as he was, dog ears and everything, but she viewed those characteristics through her privilege. She didnt grew up fearing monsters attacking her village and killing her loved ones. It was just the things that made Inuyasha Inuyasha.
I will forever defend that Inuyasha loved Kagome while before Kikyo's death, and if things would have played differently he would pick Kagome anyways. But maybe not thinking of Kikyo as selfish.
OH WHY MUST SUNRISE GO INBETWEEN BASTARDIZING INUYASHA AND IMPROVING IT
Just got the end of the arc in the anime where the Inu-gang confronts Kagura Kanna and Naraku and HOLY SHIT THEY MADE IT BETTER. Not infinitely better, they still did that thing where they over-explain things that don't even need to be explained, then leave out parts that give really cool implications (Naraku DOESN'T question why Kikyo gave him the shards? But we need about six lines between Kagome and Miroku saying "oh hey naraku's here." bruh.) But I'm mainly talking about the part with Koharu. In the manga, it was kinda just an interesting little tid-bit that wasn't really touched on other than to characterize Miroku and give some extra tension to the fights, but they made it 100% better in the anime by GIVING MIROKU A DAMN SPEECH. It wasn't long, or particularly dramatic, just a really simple, really in character, really damn good speech about "Life is difficult, and we can't stop that. The challenge comes from being strong in life." AND HOLY FUCK MAN WHY CAN'T YOU DO THIS MORE OFTEN??? Then at the end, those scenes just hanging on the crew in recovery from NEARLY DYING??? OMFG DO THIS MORE PLEASE, YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO GOOD, JUST DO GOOD PLEASE.
Anyone else find it odd that Yura of the Hair and the Thunder Brothers Manten and Hiten both died in such short times, and never came back? Like, they seemed like they'd be big deals but no, I suppose not.
