Extremely Rare Argonaut Coin A Bronze Chalkous from Iolkos, Thessaly, Greece, c. 4th century BC The coin shows the head of Artemis Iolkia wearing an earring with her hair in a bun. The reverse reads ΙΩΛΚΙΩΝ under the prow of the famed Argonaut's ship, the Argo. It has a branch attached to the stem post. Less than 6 known examples of this coin exist. This week, according to the Sothic cycle of the Egyptians, was the launch date of the Argo (July 20, 1262 BC) and the start of Jason and the Argonaut's journey from Iolcos to Colchis to attain the Golden Fleece. The site of ancient Iolcos is located in the modern village of Dimini where a Mycenaean palace was excavated.
