Google is integrating their Google+ social network with Google Talk. This is, I think, a decent way to move towards a numberless paradigm for phone calls. There are problems though. With Google+, Facebook, whatever else, how do you integrate your contacts across all those services?

The Verge is on Fire!

I love the The Verge - they regularly provide great tech fodder for folks like me. Today, there are two articles that I particularly enjoyed, one of them coming from their top-notch, magazine-esque feature department. 

Today's feature article by Paul Miller, entitled "Phoning it in: the dirty secret of IP calling, and how it will change the phone industry", details the state of IP calling and where it is headed. It focuses on the technical and carrier created hurdles that stop us from making our calls over the data network. The article is extremely readable and well done. Give it a read.

I think where the author goes a little off track is in focusing on Microsoft, Apple, etc to finally free us from the carriers and deliver voice calls through their applications. There is a natural tension there between the providers of IP communications and the people providing the voice pipes (the wireless carriers) and my belief is that the wireless providers will stand in the way of full integration of proprietary applications like Skype and Facetime as long as they can. Furthermore, what happens when my friend with an Iphone and Facetime wants to send a file to my Android phone with Skype? He can't. 

I believe the best solution is one that benefits both the end user and carrier. After all, transition comes easier and faster when you lower the pain of the transition for all parties involved. The end user wants to grab his cell phone/computer/tablet/toaster/smart wall choose a contact and then be able to communicate in any manner he wants with one touch. People don't want to worry about what application they are using or what application their friend is using. They just want to send that video chat/file/screen share/instant message in a painless way unencumbered by all that. As the author of The Verge article points out, standard cell communications still thrive because it is so easy and ubiquitous to simply dial a number and go. 

The carrier on the other hand wants be the one that handles all that. They want to be able to bill for services they provide in ways other than the monthly data fee. Like other people I don't prefer it that way, but if we want quick progress in this arena, maybe that is a sacrifice we can make for now (ok, ok I'm groaning here too!).

I think the answer can be found in something that already exists in the enterprise environment. It is battle hardened in the fires of world corporate communications, and is, I think, the most promising way to deliver what everyone is looking for. It is a universal communication standard that everyone can use. It provides all the communication methods that people are looking for while at the same time providing a way for carriers to maintain their current position as exalted lords of wireless communication. If you follow corporate communications at all then you already know what I'm going to say. The answer is SIP (follow the link to find out more).

Is it perfect yet? No. It has problems with different companies adding to the SIP standard and ruining inter-operability a lot like the HTML standard in the early days. Still, I thinks SIP is the future. It provides a way to connect diverse devices and operating systems in a way nothing else can at the moment. Also, by making use of SIP signaling, the carriers can differentiate (and bill) for different types of services. If not the best of both worlds, perhaps it is the "good enough" of both worlds.
