TTS is gone.

Not "gone" per-se, but Alphabusa's term "Indefinite Hiatus," fills me with real sorrow. However I plan to remain hopeful and positive, and I 100% plan on supporting Alpha in whatever it is he plans to do next.

That being said, I'm absolutely NOT giving up hope for TTS coming back someday. It's what got me into Warhammer 40k, it's what made me fall in love with the setting, the characters, and also what taught me not to take it so seriously. Hell, my own little fanfiction between Perturabo and my OC Necrontyr princess Nehetari takes place in a pseudo-future-TTS setting.

Seeing what has happened to the series, I plan to continue sharing my cheesy little fanfiction because I want TTS to remain present in everyone's memory; not just fade into the backdrop behind Warhammer +. It'll be a little contribution considering I don't run a huge blog, but if many others like me do the same, perhaps some of the powers-that-be will take notice and, well... ....maaaaaybe something will get done about it?

But I digress; my takeaway from watching Alpha's video through to the end is, above all, there is still hope. TTS isn't "gone," just shelved, and honestly I fully support Alpha's decision to put his family and his own legal security first. He must be completely devastated and terrified right now. All I can do at this stage is continue to support his future projects (I think I may even throw in my first ever Patreon pledge to him), and continue to hold up the banner he raised, along with my like-minded artists and content creators, and try to keep TTS's spirit around in the fandom until GW wakes up and smells the damage they've done to their brand.

And if they don't? Well, as Baldermort would say, "At least I'll still have fun." (Fantastic lore channel by the way I 100% reccomend checking him out)

(Also please excuse my ramblings; its currently about 1:00 in the morning because this shit has me so upset I cannot sleep)

IP policy

I've been looking at other college's IP policies regarding staff research. A lot of it is pie in the sky for us at the moment. But as Stephen and I were saying (I promised him a database of the research and expertise areas by two weeks for media) it needs to be in place before things happen as an enabling condition.

I mentioned this to Rob in Cork yesterday and nothing could stop him from looking at other college's policies also. He has an ex-colleague who manages the GCC institutional repository who we will be hitting up for information when we have serious queries to ask.

Imagine trying to write a paper only to find that you have to pay for an idea you want to use to get your point across. Think about how much that would stunt your freedom of speech. If you wanted to write a progressive proposal or something, sorry! No dice.

I don't really remember why I ended up watching this yesterday, but it just served to remind me again how stupid intellectual property STILL is. IP policy means that only huge corporations get to use all these good ideas. It means that, if a social media entrepreneur wants to start their own thang, their only option after a while will be to sell what start up they have- there's no way to rise to the top because they'll soon find themselves blocked by an expensive barrage of copyrights and IP patents. The only thing to do is sell new ideas to the big guys to add to their jolly stockpile.

A big company that can afford to buy ideas is more likely to have the means to use them though, nu? If Apple buys the concept of 'cloud sharing', the tool will be used by more people than if a single web developer used it... but now it appears that even Google won't be able to use whatever immense package of ideas Nortel has been saving up. Nortel, by the way, is the invention company responsible for the telephone, the gramaphone, digital switching, and a ridiculous amount of other inventions that have shaped this era.

Maybe it's good that Google can't take over the Internet. Maybe it's better that hardware (the computer companies) won over pure software (Google)... but I think it would be even better if EVERYONE had access to these ideas. That way, the companies could compete for best USE of them. Whoever used the ideas and did their job best would either come out on top or come out truer to their original company goals, and the little developers could use not only their own ideas but also finally be able to combine the ones already out there to invent other platforms, thus maintaining the diversity of ingenious communications applications out there.

Do we want the Internet to be run by a few corporate giants; the world run by man, or do we want to maintain a diverse forest of interesting yet functional plants and platforms who are allowed to cross-pollinate ideas and strengthen their species code/ use to us? I suppose the latter will and is developing within corporate software ecosystems, and that may be okay. They're getting the hang of democracy- letting developers send in their apps and users to put in their input. The next step is to let the ideas inventors need to build truly great things be free.

I suppose I'm not super concerned about the ecology of the Internet at the present moment, but I have a feeling it'll be a good thing to keep tabs on. Software v.s. hardware. Corporate constructs and the organisms they influence and are WE one of those organisms? I'm assuming most of us use social media so the answer is yes. There are other reasons Intellectual property is such a big problem, so if you want to read more, here's a start. It has a lot to do with saving lives, curing cancer, you know. Silly stuff like that.
