On twitter, (#) hashtag is a powerful tool to track people’s posts. When the hashtagged words become popular, they will be part of the list of trending topics. During the election 2013, #IPASOKSIDICK reached the top of the trending list on twitter because people made use of this pun in relation to Richard “Dick” Gordon who is running for senator. Gordon ranked 13th in the official tallies of the senatorial race.

[1] The hashtag was originated from a fellow digital team member of Gordon, Kenneth Lloyd Banga-Dimalibot. When the election was over and the votes were counted in, he still hopes to bring back Gordon in the list by tweeting “Gordon in 13th place right after Honasan at 8:05am. #PushGordon”. [2] In doing this, he hopes that he would catch the attention of the Philippine citizens to agree with him and to persuade them that Dick Gordon is worthy to be a senator. [3] However, the hashtag formulated by Honasan was changed to #IPASOKSIDICK by Filipino netizens. It imposed two meanings: a literal sexual act and a motivation campaign. The Filipino netizens made fun of Gordon’s nickname. They tweeted all sorts of things such as:

"12 lang ang napili sa try out,pang 13 ako. Hayyy practice ako ng practice. May uniform na ako. BAKIT?!" —Dick Gordon ‪#IpasokSiDick

“Dick needs to be stronger and harder if it won't work out.. he can try another position ‪#ipasoksidick”

“It's not about the size, it's about the performance.” #IpasokSiDick

“Trending pa rin ang ‪#IpasokSiDick. Hindi pa rin ba maipasok?” NANLAMBOT BA?!

“Labas pasok ba si Dick sa top 12?” #IpasokSiDick

[4] Furthermore, #ipasoksidick is trending not because most people really wanted Gordon to be a senator but because they were just making fun of his name. [5] It shows that Filipinos are fond of creating green jokes or malicious jokes. [6] The logical fallacies that were shown were ad hominem and bandwagon. Netizens attacked Gordon’s nickname and were not after Gordon’s political background. In addition to the hashtag, it was reported that it was part of the trending list for two to three days, hence giving evidence that Filipinos are easily bandwagon. If everyone is posting it, they must post it as well so that they won’t feel outdated. Ethos and logos were used in the tweets. They became popular because netizens used the name of a candidate for senator and it became funny and catchy because it’s double meaning.

[7] The hashtag brought popularity to Dick Gordon. Not everyone knew him until it was formulated. People also started noticing his works and personality because of the fame. It is also said that the hashtag was the best joke in the history of Philippine election. However, it pollutes the minds of innocent people who are also members of twitter. There are ages below 13 who have twitter and they might have seen the malicious tweets created by adults.

[8] Richard Gordon was empowered and at the same time disempowered by the smutty hashtag. Because of it, he became widely known by numbers of people in most countries around the world but at the same time disempowered because it brought shame to his name due to its other meaning. There is nothing funnier than a political joke and that serves the media maker’s interests.

[9] Gordon didn’t makes it to the top 12 list of senators but he indeed makes it to the number one trending list on Twitter. Dick Gordon landed on 13th place right after Gringo Honasan by merely 300,000 votes. As months passed by, Filipinos began to realize that it was a great loss of not having Gordon as senator. They even talked about how generous, intelligent and caring Gordon is on Twitter. There is this one instance where Gordon led Red Cross in the streets. This really caught the attentions of the Filipinos and concluded that Gordon is worthy to become a senator.

[10] I am one of the citizens who do not know Richard Gordon by political background, by name and even by face. But when the hashtag was brought up, I suddenly talked about him all day with my friends and family. I find it really funny and catchy that I chose this topic for this paper. I will not forget the day that I laughed so hard and engaged in the topic. If I were Richard Gordon, I would thank the Filipino netizens because I owe my fame to them. His works, contributions and personality is now widely known because of the hashtag, #Ipasoksidick.
