Lucky Me! "Pregnant Pause" commercial
POWER OF FAMILY MEALS
Lucky Me’s commercial, “Pregnant pause”, is about a complete family eating together in a dining table and having an open conversation.
[1] The advocacy “Kainang pamilya mahalaga, Lucky me!” created the commercial to promote a strong family relationship. [2] Its role is to encourage parents to eat dinner with their children and talk about how their day was. [3] In the commercial, it was seen that the family was gathered together in the dining room to eat dinner. Before they started to eat, the daughter suddenly called the attention of her dad and said, “Dad. Buntis po…Si Dianne”. The parents thought that it was their daughter who’s pregnant that they held their breath and gave a scared look to her. After the daughter said that her friend Dianne is pregnant, she asked her mother if being pregnant is hard. Her mother gave her a brief answer – “Anak, mas mahirap maging ina”. The message of the commercial is that Dinner is a good time to have a quality bonding with the children. Parents will ask on how their day was and will listen to them while the children talk then the other way around. [4] Eating dinner together brings good result. When making it a habit, the parents tend to engage to their children’s daily lives. Children will also gain confidence in sharing their problems at school such as peer pressure, school works, love and many more. Parents will now provide intimacy, concern and advises to them, thus their children will have a good perspective (“Advocacy|Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga, 2011).
[5] It is shown in the commercial that the daughter was very open to her parents that she brought up the issue about her friend being pregnant. She didn’t keep it because it was bothering her so she shared it to her parents. On the other hand, the parents were very understanding. They did not show exaggeration or anger. Some parents would react in a different way. They would comment on how irresponsible Dianne is and how their daughter should not be like her. Some might even force their daughter to stay away from Dianne. Moreover, the commercial shows on how having dinner with the complete family can be very powerful.
[6] The logical fallacy that was used was appeals to emotion. The company is using family relationship to catch the attention of the consumers. Every time the commercial plays, viewers will get the idea of eating Lucky Me with family is a good habit. The rhetorical appeal used was pathos and ethos. Pathos was used because viewers will feel the sense of belongingness of a family and ethos was used because at the end of the family scene, Sharon Cuneta promotes family bonding during meals. In show business, Sharon is known as the epitome of a strong family. Because of her image, people will instantly believe her.
The commercial does not impose a negative message. It only shows a positive one and that is to bring families closer. It empowers open-minded parents and confident children while it disempowers close-minded parents and diffident children. This serves the media maker’s interest because most families not only in the Philippines but also in the world are not as close as they think they are. When children are asked about how there day was, they are only going to answer it by three simple words – It was okay. The sad thing is that some times, it is entirely not. There is a valid reason why children prefer to hide their feelings. It’s because they don’t want to get reprimanded or scolded. They think that parents will only add fuel into the flame.
[9] It is found in the Website of the Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga (2011) that Mansmith and fielders, Inc, used their campaign as a full case study in a seminar. Studies were about the effects and benefits of family dinners. It was observed that Dinning as a family create happier and healthier teenagers. In the report, “teenagers who dined with their families five to seven times a week were four times less likely to use alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana than those teens that ate with their families fewer than three times a week.” (“Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga”. Para 16).
[10] This media sample affects my initial understanding toward the text by looking at the benefits of family dinners. It never really crossed my mind on how powerful family dinners are because I prefer eating alone. I was used to having no parents during dinnertime and I was used to eat first because my sisters don’t like to eat early. I would usually go to the dinning table and wait for my food. When the food is presented, I would eat it in 5 minutes and go back to my room. Even the times when my family is present in the dinning table, I would remain quite and simply eat my food while my sisters would talk about their day. I sometimes even think that maybe I’m just a quite and a loner type. But I have to admit to myself, there is another reason why. I am scared. I am scared to be judged by my own parents. I am scared of how they will reprimand, scold or even tease me. I am scared on how they will think of me. I let alone my problems rather than to add one by my parents. But because I’m living faraway from home, I suddenly miss them. When they ask me about my day, I would automatically say that it was okay. But when I say those three simple words, I feel guilty. So, I talk about my day in details. I also find it strange because I never knew my parents would be so open-minded like the time I finally admitted that I have a crush on someone. I thought they were going to say that I am too young and that I might get pregnant but the actual words that they said were “It’s ok. We’re getting old anyway.” From that day on, I regretted my behavior during family dinners. Our family relationship could’ve taken to the next level before. I hope it’s not too late.

#IPASOKSIDICK
On twitter, (#) hashtag is a powerful tool to track people’s posts. When the hashtagged words become popular, they will be part of the list of trending topics. During the election 2013, #IPASOKSIDICK reached the top of the trending list on twitter because people made use of this pun in relation to Richard “Dick” Gordon who is running for senator. Gordon ranked 13th in the official tallies of the senatorial race.
[1] The hashtag was originated from a fellow digital team member of Gordon, Kenneth Lloyd Banga-Dimalibot. When the election was over and the votes were counted in, he still hopes to bring back Gordon in the list by tweeting “Gordon in 13th place right after Honasan at 8:05am. #PushGordon”. [2] In doing this, he hopes that he would catch the attention of the Philippine citizens to agree with him and to persuade them that Dick Gordon is worthy to be a senator. [3] However, the hashtag formulated by Honasan was changed to #IPASOKSIDICK by Filipino netizens. It imposed two meanings: a literal sexual act and a motivation campaign. The Filipino netizens made fun of Gordon’s nickname. They tweeted all sorts of things such as:
"12 lang ang napili sa try out, pang 13 ako. Hayyy practice ako ng practice. May uniform na ako. BAKIT?!" —Dick Gordon #IpasokSiDick
“Dick needs to be stronger and harder if it won't work out.. he can try another position #ipasoksidick”
“It's not about the size, it's about the performance.” #IpasokSiDick
“Trending pa rin ang #IpasokSiDick. Hindi pa rin ba maipasok?” NANLAMBOT BA?!
“Labas pasok ba si Dick sa top 12?” #IpasokSiDick
#ipasoksidick #erection2013
(twitter/search, n.d.)
[4] Furthermore, #ipasoksidick is trending not because most people really wanted Gordon to be a senator but because they were just making fun of his name. [5] It shows that Filipinos are fond of creating green jokes or malicious jokes. [6] The logical fallacies that were shown were ad hominem and bandwagon. Netizens attacked Gordon’s nickname and were not after Gordon’s political background. In addition to the hashtag, it was reported that it was part of the trending list for two to three days, hence giving evidence that Filipinos are easily bandwagon. If everyone is posting it, they must post it as well so that they won’t feel outdated. Ethos and logos were used in the tweets. They became popular because netizens used the name of a candidate for senator and it became funny and catchy because it’s double meaning.
[7] The hashtag brought popularity to Dick Gordon. Not everyone knew him until it was formulated. People also started noticing his works and personality because of the fame. It is also said that the hashtag was the best joke in the history of Philippine election. However, it pollutes the minds of innocent people who are also members of twitter. There are ages below 13 who have twitter and they might have seen the malicious tweets created by adults.
[8] Richard Gordon was empowered and at the same time disempowered by the smutty hashtag. Because of it, he became widely known by numbers of people in most countries around the world but at the same time disempowered because it brought shame to his name due to its other meaning. There is nothing funnier than a political joke and that serves the media maker’s interests.
[9] Gordon didn’t makes it to the top 12 list of senators but he indeed makes it to the number one trending list on Twitter. Dick Gordon landed on 13th place right after Gringo Honasan by merely 300,000 votes. As months passed by, Filipinos began to realize that it was a great loss of not having Gordon as senator. They even talked about how generous, intelligent and caring Gordon is on Twitter. There is this one instance where Gordon led Red Cross in the streets. This really caught the attentions of the Filipinos and concluded that Gordon is worthy to become a senator.
[10] I am one of the citizens who do not know Richard Gordon by political background, by name and even by face. But when the hashtag was brought up, I suddenly talked about him all day with my friends and family. I find it really funny and catchy that I chose this topic for this paper. I will not forget the day that I laughed so hard and engaged in the topic. If I were Richard Gordon, I would thank the Filipino netizens because I owe my fame to them. His works, contributions and personality is now widely known because of the hashtag, #Ipasoksidick.

FLESH EATING DISEASE
[1] It was Monday night when Bandila reported the news about a mysterious disease in the Philippines. [3] It said that a spreading disease has hit Pangasinan. The disease was known to be a flesh-eating disease. [2] The news filled the networking sites such as facebook, twitter, etc and brought concerns to the people. It was really alarming because through the report, people began to believe the prediction of Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj to be true. Selvaraj said:
"The Lord says there is a place called Pangasinan. The Lord says it is in the northernmost part in your land. From there a grievous disease will spread all over the world. That will consume the flesh of men; all their upper (outer) skin will begin to decay. It will pierce through the bones. The fear of this disease will spread all over the world. The Lord said that this (disease) would begin from the Philippines. This will then spread to Cebu," (Goswami, para 4, 2014).
After a day, the news was known to be a hoax. [4 & 9] Bandila aired about a little girl who is suffering from a disease that is not far from the flesh eating disease that people think it is. The girl was been sick long before today and still no one got infected. The disease is not spreading in the area or within her family. Her family also sought for help last 2011 and was aired on the same year. The question is did Bandila intend to air the news again in order to link it to the prediction of Sadhu? [5] Why did the news reporter or producers pushed through with the report without any scientific confirmation? In relation to the report, TV patrol was questioned about it’s creditability. [6] The report showed incomplete and untruthful facts about the girl’s condition. They should’ve further investigated about the disease of the child is having whether it is the flesh-eating disease, leprosy or other diseases. It used the three rhetorical appeals – ethos, pathos and logos. Knowing that T.V patrol was awarded as the best news telecast in the country, it can surely make the people believe in all the news that they reported through its name. The report made the people alarmed and frightened with the possibility that they might get infected with the disease. Because of this information, people began to think that the reason for this phenomenon is the prediction of Sadhu.
[7] Above all, the report brought people back to Jesus. The people started praying to give thanks and to ask for forgiveness. They started to believe in miracles because they believe that it will only take a miracle in order to solve this phenomenon. However, this media used the report in order to gain publicity. [8] It empowers the truth of news while it disempowers the sensationalizing of news because what the people need is the truth. They wanted to know whether the disease and the prediction of Selvaraj are real or not.
[10] When I heard the news in Bandila, I was totally shocked because I recalled the prophecy of Severaj. I didn’t want it to be true but at the same time I wanted it to be true because I also read that miracle healing will happen there. I want the people to be safe and well. I was also frightened that I prayed to God and read the tiny booklet entitled, “Lord of Pardon”. In the first page, I read about a prayer to St. Manaoag, the Patron saint of Pangasinan. I got chills all over my body because I really intended to offer a prayer to the people of Pangasinan and there it was, just in the first page. I also contacted my parents and told them about the news and they got also alarmed that they told anybody else as well. I watched TV patrol since I was a little kid, so I trusted their reports and opinions about it. Through thorough and further research about the flesh eating disease, I read that it is not a viral disease that it can only spread through direct contact. Because of most Filipinos’ deep faith in God, they automatically believed the news aired in Bandila.
BUY THEM ALL!
In today’s world, consumers are considered as modern slaves. They are so attached to media that their needs and wants are manipulated. Tons of advertisements are being shown to people that would make them want it and seek for more. It is like they are being hypnotized by the names of the brand and trends that they would buy them without giving it a second thought.
[1] The poster is designed by Winston Tseng. [2] He created the poster to inform the consumers that not all things, especially expensive things, are needed. [3] In the picture, you can see different products from top brands inside a grocery cart. We can say that the person who put these things is very wealthy. The question now is, “Does he really need those things?” [4] The logos of the brands are located on the boxes or on the bags but the designer changed the names to form a sentence – “IDon’t need any of this shit”. [6] The IDon’t is from IPhone, need is from Nike, any is from tiffany, of is from h&m and shit is from playstation4. The logical fallacy is ad hominem where the creator attacked the major companies such as apple, Nike and the like. The rhetorical appeals used are logos and ethos where the viewers should see the sentence formed and used the authority of the brands because of its fame. [5] In relation to the photo, it goes to show that consumers buy things that are really not necessary. The consumer has a luxurious lifestyle where he buys all the latest trends and most expensive items. He would just put all the items in a huge cart and buy them all at once. From gadgets, clothes, accessories, food and entertainment, this person wants it all.
[7] This photo creates a positive message that consumers should think first of what they are going to buy if it’s really necessary but it also creates a negative message towards the companies whom are being attacked that all of them are not needed. We cannot deny the fact that we need cellular phones, clothes, food and entertainment, yet we must be aware and be careful for the things that we are about to spend on if it’s really worth it. [8] The poster empowers the simple living while it disempowers the luxurious living. It tells that people don’t need the luxurious things because they are not worth for the long run and it is too expensive. They are other alternatives that can give you both the satisfaction and comfort.
[9] The companies that were mentioned earlier in this paper had a same goal – to manipulate people’s needs in order for them to buy their products. They tell the consumers through advertisements that their products will bring huge benefits to them. Some companies tell them that their life would be way easier and faster and some even say that their products will make the person look cooler and popular. Hence, a lot of people are inevitably attracted to the products because of the proposed benefits.
[10] I will admit that I am this type of consumer. I want to buy things that are on trends and branded mainly because of its good quality and popularity. But then I realized that most of those things are really not necessary. For example is the time when my father and I bought an Xbox. My father insisted that we should have an Xbox at home because it’s a good workout and entertainment. I agreed with him right away because I always wanted an Xbox because I saw it with one of my friends and it is all over the advertisements. When we bought it, I was so excited to play it that I imagined myself playing with it almost every day. But when college started, I never had the chance to play with it because I was too far away from home and I don’t have a TV to connect it to at the dorm. I also heard that no one is using it at home, not even my father. He said that he was too lazy to exercise and he doesn’t know how to operate the thing. What a total waste of money. We even bought it right before college started.
As I have said, most of the branded products are not necessary. They are just material things. It doesn’t give true happiness and satisfaction to the person. Happiness lies within you and the people surrounds you.
I recommend you all to watch this short clip from a movie. :D
BLURRED LINES
[1] Robin Thicke featuring T.I. recorded a song entitled “Blurred lines” with their producer, Pharallel Williams. They composed the song because they intended to make a similar beat to Marvin Gaye’s “Got to give it up” and make people enjoy and dance to it. This song has been a worldwide hit and peaked at song charts for months. The beat of the song is indeed catchy and groovy. The song was all over the radio and almost everyone was singing to it. However, some people are not aware of the message behind the song and some people are saying that it’s sexist and some says that it isn’t.
[2] The target audience is everyone, especially the youth. It’s got a sexy appeal to men and women. [3] The song contains sexual consent that some says its even promoting rape culture. The title says it all - Women’s words are blurred lines. Like in the lyrics, “I know you want it” and “let me liberate you”, it’s implying that women are saying “no” to sex even though they really want to and that gives and idea that the victims of rape are asking for it and liking it. [4] There are two music videos for this song. One is where women are all naked and are just walking around in the same room with the singers, Robin Thicke and T.I. while the other one is where women are wearing clothes but no difference with their ways of being liberated. It imposes male superiority and dominance. [5] Both the song and the music video show the lifestyle of liberated people and the value of male superiority. [6] The logical reasoning used is hasty generalization. Not all women are liberated; some are conservative that finds this song very sexist. The rhetorical appeal used is logos because the music video was quite simple and viewers must analyze the lyrics to comprehend it. The composers used metaphors and some of the lyrics are not literal and it states another message. [8] This song empowers men and disempowers women because [7] most of the text is offensive to women like the lyrics are telling them to be submissive to men. [9] In the contrary, Robin Thicke says other wise. He says that the song is not sexist and it even promotes equality of men and women. He proved this statement through the lyrics, “but you’re an animal, baby it’s in your nature” and “that man is not your maker”. The first one implies that we are all animals and men and women are alike and equal. The second one implies that men are not the authority of women. He also mentioned his love for his wife and his deep respect for women. He and his wife met when he was only 16 years old and are happily in love. His wife was his “good girl” that she would make love to him because they have been together for twenty years. But as a media literate person, I can see that his statement contradicts the music video and that his lyrics are clearly about making a woman to sleep with him even if she says no. Robin Thicke was even named sexist of the year, 2013.
[10] I won’t deny the fact that I played this song over and over again and sing it in the shower. At first, I never really grasp the message of the song and I just sing to it word for word and danced to the beat. I could say that this song is an art because it has a lot of interpretations and perspectives. Others see it as sexist while others see it as a feminist movement. Just like what Robin Thicke said, “It is a type of art that makes a conversation goes on”. For partygoers, they would just simply sang “Everybody get up” and have fun.

STEREOTYPES AMONG MUSLIMS
In the picture, it shows the stereotypes among Muslims. Muslims are being stereotyped everywhere like in the society, news, airports, movies, and the whole world.
[1] The photo was powered by uthinkido.com and was created by a Muslim. They want to make the people aware that Muslims are not all terrorists or not what you think they are. [2] The target audience is everybody – rich, poor, politicians, non-politicians, young and old. [3] This photo wants to stop stereotyping among Muslims and to put an end to racism. [4] The bottom-line is that a lot of people judge Muslims and see them as if they are terrorists but the truth is that they are the same as everybody else – people. They are family oriented, god-fearing, affectionate, and caring people. They also have feelings and the whole world’s way of looking at them is always hurting them.
[5] This photo presented Muslims as bad people that they are engaging in wars and involving in act of terrorism. They show that Muslims are insane and bloodthirsty people. They can blow up themselves or any institutions any minute of the day. [6] Thus, this form of media commits logical fallacy of overgeneralization. Of course not all people look at Muslims that way. Some people are acquainted to Muslims and know who they truly are. The mode of persuasion used in the photo is pathos. It is appealing to the emotions of the audience as some viewers might feel guilty for having this kind of perspectives on Muslims and some might feel relief that finally, people will come to their senses that Muslims are people too.
[7] It is sad to look at them as terrorist and harmful people but they are really friendly and kind-hearted people. [8] The photo empowers the true image of Muslims while it disempowers the image of the stereotypes imprinted on them. It promotes the anti-racism and recognizes the justice of what Muslims needs – acceptance and equality in the society.
[9] The reason why Muslims are being stereotyped as terrorist is because of the “terrorist acts” committed against America but everyone knows that they are two sides of every story. For example is the incident, 9/11. Around 3,000 people died during the twin tower attack and because of it, American grew into fear and blamed them for their loss. But not everyone knows that the bombing in Afghanistan was five times the tragedy. 15,000 innocent people died because of the bombs dropped by the forces of United States. They killed men, women and children. It is said that U.S dropped bombs in Afghanistan because of the Taliban. Again, lot of people doesn’t know that the CIA created the Taliban. It goes to show that even though that Americans are more civilized than Muslims, it doesn’t put to conclusion that they are less of a terrorist. If a country doesn’t stop meddling with other countries for their personal interest, they will receive a reprisal. Not all terrorists are Muslims and not all Muslims are terrorist. I believe that what Muslims did were just for their protection. (UTV Motion Pictures, 2012)
Behind all the terrorism news and religion, Muslims should be treated as equal. They deserve equality and respect as the same as other races do. We are all the same in ways of living therefore we should not judge them for being different and outcast them in the society where they also belong.
This media affects my initial understanding by looking at them in a deeper sense. I should not grow fear towards Muslims because they are just like me. I have a friend who is a muslim and we have a lot in common such as likes, dislikes, and hobbies. I can assure you that she is not a terrorist. At first, I looked at her as a bit odd because of the way she dresses but underneath the veil is a girl like me.

VICTORIA’S SECRET VS. DOVE
[1] In the picture, there is the ad of victoria’s secret’s campaign and dove’s campaign. The campaign of Victoria’s secret is about loving one’s body while dove promotes real beauty. [2] The viewers of these ads are adults and teenagers, mostly women, who are having troubles in loving their bodies and who are having insecurities. [3] In Victoria’s Secret’s love my body campaign ad, they put their “angels” in the picture. However “love my body” doesn’t fit the models because they represent the perception of the society of beauty. It’s a complete irony. What’s not to love in a perfect body? Nowadays, It’s hard to love your body if your body doesn’t have those desirable attributes such as a beautiful face, thin body, flawless, tall, and young looking as them. On the other hand Dove’s campaign advocate real beauty. They show it through having models that have different kinds of body type and are smiling.
[4] There are two purposes of creating this campaign. First is to make the society embrace and love their body and second is to sell their products. By loving your body you have to buy their products. The company makes a profit out of people’s insecurities thus people has the urge to buy their lotion, soap, deodorant, lingerie and other products to attain and maintain the beauty of their body. They simply tell and manipulate people’s needs. [5]Victoria’s Secret models have the sexual perfection look that is nearly impossible to attain. They must’ve worked out in the gym regularly, eaten only one meal a day and had plastic surgeries to have that body. Some people even say that they are anorexic that they must have puked all their foods out to have that slim figure. The models of Dove say it otherwise. In the picture are relaxed, comfortable, and happy people and are proud to show off their beauty. They come in different sizes and types of body. Their smiles also show that they embrace real beauty. They are the type of model that doesn’t count on calories that they eat a day and that doesn’t engage in an intense workout. A balanced diet and a good exercise are their way of getting fit, healthy and beautiful.
[6] To persuade the viewers, the dove campaign created an ad that attacks the ad of the Victoria's secret. It used a logical fallacy which is ad hominem. They created almost a replica of it but they changed their models. The ads establish ethos because it used their company’s name to present authority. Since these two companies are both successful, they make the people look and listen to their campaign ads. They also express pathos because they want to make the people love their body and take away their insecurities. [7] These ads impose a positive message to women to love their body and that everyone is beautiful. The negative part of it is that Dove is attacking the campaign of Victoria’s Secret. [8] In Victoria’s secret, they empower women who have desirable traits and they disempower women who haven’t while Dove empowers women who have low self-esteem and disempowers the judgmental society’s definition of beauty.
[9] These ads alone don’t clearly show the intentions of the campaign. With further research in the net it says that in Victoria’s Secret the “love your body” is the theme of their new lingerie line. Their bras are called Body, so it is entirely not a self-love campaign. They are advertising their campaign to let the people love their latest collection of bras. Meanwhile in Dove, the models are wearing the old collection of dove.
[10] Now that I am aware of the intentions of both campaigns, I realized that Victoria’s secret isn’t entirely after for loving one’s body and that Dove shouldn’t step on the ad of other campaign just to make it a lot better. Both campaigns tell to love the body but they don’t tell people to accept their body. They are telling the viewers to love their body if their body is beautiful and to be beautiful they have to buy their products. Beauty campaigns should promote health instead. There are people who have a proportionate body but aren’t healthy and people who are slightly slim but are healthy. People should learn to accept and love their body. Horizontally challenged people should watch Victoria’s secret while eating a bag of chips without feeling insecure and jealous and flawless people should not disempower other people’s body type.
