IIM Calls 2025: 48 Came from Nagpur — Which Institute Produced Them and Why It Matters for You
"Bhai IPMAT du ya seedha graduation ke baad CAT?"
If I had a rupee for every time a Nagpur student in Class 11 has asked some version of this question, I'd fund my own MBA.
It's the right question to ask. And the wrong answers — given by coaching institutes with a financial stake in your choice — have pushed a lot of students in the wrong direction.
So here's the version without an agenda.
I'm going to compare IPMAT and CAT honestly — across career outcomes, difficulty, timelines, costs, and suitability for different types of students. And at the end, I'll tell you when each one is the smarter call.
What You're Actually Comparing
Let's be precise about what IPMAT and CAT are, because the comparison often gets muddled.
IPMAT (Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test)
Entrance exam for the 5-year BBA + MBA integrated program at IIMs
You appear for it right after Class 12, at age 17–18
Primary exam: IPMAT Indore (150 seats at IIM Indore + access to IIM Ranchi, Amritsar, Shillong)
Related exams: IPMAT Rohtak (120 seats), JIPMAT (240 seats at IIM Bodh Gaya + IIM Jammu)
You graduate at 22–23 with a BBA + MBA dual degree from an IIM
CAT (Common Admission Test)
Entrance exam for 2-year MBA at IIMs and 100+ other top business schools
You appear for it after graduation, typically at age 21–25
99+ percentile needed for IIM A/B/C; 95+ for other top IIMs
You graduate at 24–26 with an MBA from an IIM
Both ultimately lead to an IIM degree. The difference is in when you get there, how you get there, and what you experience along the way.
The Core Comparison: 7 Parameters
1. Age and Timeline
Verdict: IPMAT gives you a 2–4 year head start on your career. This is not a small advantage. At age 22, an IPM graduate is already placed at top companies while a CAT aspirant is just starting their MBA.
2. Difficulty Level
This is where most people get confused. Let's be honest about both:
IPMAT Indore difficulty:
40,000 applicants for 150 seats
Sectional cutoffs are the killer — you must clear all three simultaneously
VA cutoff (112/160 = 70% accuracy) eliminates most students
QA SA section requires Class 11/12 Higher Maths — not just Class 10 basics
Realistic success rate: ~0.375% (150/40,000)
CAT difficulty:
3+ lakh applicants for ~4,000 IIM seats (all IIMs combined)
99+ percentile needed for IIM A/B/C (roughly top 3,000 scorers in the country)
95+ percentile for other top IIMs
Realistic IIM A/B/C success rate: ~1% (3,000/3,00,000)
Verdict: Both are extremely competitive. Neither is "easier." IPMAT is hard in a specific way (sectional cutoffs, Higher Maths). CAT is hard in a scale way (lakhs of competitors). Choosing one over the other based on "it's easier" is a mistake.
3. Financial Cost — Total Investment
Here's a comparison most people don't do:
IPMAT Route — Total cost:
IPMAT Coaching (Class 11–12): ₹80,000–1,50,000
IIM Indore IPM Program Fees (5 years): ~₹25–30 lakh
Living expenses (5 years in Indore): ~₹8–12 lakh
Total: ₹35–45 lakh
CAT Route — Total cost:
3 years of Graduation (BBA/B.Com/BA): ₹3–15 lakh (varies widely)
CAT Coaching (1–2 years): ₹1–2 lakh
IIM A/B/C MBA Fees (2 years): ₹24–32 lakh
Living expenses during graduation: ₹6–12 lakh
Living during MBA: ₹8–12 lakh
Total: ₹42–73 lakh
Verdict: IPMAT route is often cheaper in total — even though the IIM program fee is similar. You save on 3 years of graduation costs and start earning 2–4 years earlier.
4. Career Outcomes
This is ultimately what matters.
IIM Indore IPM graduates (2024 placements):
Average package: ~₹25 LPA
Top package: ₹1.2 Crore
Highest recruiters: McKinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, Microsoft, HUL, Unilever
Age at placement: 22–23
IIM A/B/C MBA graduates (2024 placements):
Average package: ₹30–35 LPA (IIM A/B/C specifically)
Top package: ₹2–4 Crore
Highest recruiters: Same companies — McKinsey, BCG, Goldman, Deloitte
Age at placement: 24–26
The honest truth: IIM A/B/C MBA does provide a higher average package than IIM Indore IPM — but the comparison is slightly unfair because IIM A/B/C MBA students often have 2–3 years of work experience before joining, which inflates their package expectations.
For a fresh student at age 17 from Nagpur — choosing between IIM Indore at 22 (₹25 LPA) vs IIM A/B/C at 26 (₹35 LPA) — the IIM Indore option earns more money over a lifetime even if the starting package is lower, because they start earning 4 years earlier.
5. Risk Profile
Verdict: IPMAT has a built-in safety net because the same preparation opens NPAT, SET, and Christ ET. Even if you don't crack IIM Indore, you end up at a top BBA college. With CAT, if you're at 92 percentile, your options narrow significantly.
6. Suitability by Student Profile
Choose IPMAT if:
You are clear at age 16–17 that management is your career direction
You want to start your IIM journey without spending 3 years in a generic graduation program
You have (or are willing to build) strong Quantitative and Verbal skills
You're a Commerce or Humanities student (science students can also attempt, but must learn higher maths)
You want to reach IIM status at 22, not 26
You also want NMIMS/Symbiosis/Christ as strong backup options
Choose CAT (after graduation) if:
You genuinely don't know at 17 whether management is for you
You want to explore engineering, science, or other fields first — and then decide
You need work experience to strengthen a CAT application (for IIM A/B/C WAT-PI, work experience helps)
You're targeting specifically IIM A, B, or C for the highest possible package — and are willing to wait until 26 to get there
You have a genuine technical/engineering interest and want to combine it with an MBA later
7. The Choice Nobody Talks About: IPMAT + CAT Later
Here's what most people miss: IPMAT and CAT are not mutually exclusive.
An IPM graduate from IIM Indore can — and many do — pursue executive MBAs or specialized programs later. IIM Indore IPM graduates are among the strongest CAT performers when they return for post-graduate programs because their analytical foundation is exceptional.
More importantly: a student who joins IPMAT coaching at IMS Nagpur is building the exact same skills (QA, VA, LR) that CAT tests — just at a different level. If they don't crack IPMAT but want to try CAT after graduation, their base is already strong.
IMS Nagpur is one of the only coaching institutes in Nagpur where the same centre offers both IPMAT coaching AND CAT coaching. Students can seamlessly transition from IPMAT prep to CAT prep without changing institutes, faculties, or starting from scratch.
The Bottom Line: Which Should YOU Choose?
Choose IPMAT right now, in Class 11 or 12, if: You're between 16 and 18, you're interested in a management career, and you're willing to put in 10–14 months of serious preparation. The upside — an IIM degree at 22 — is significant. The backup — top BBA colleges through NPAT/SET/Christ — is strong. The risk of wasted time is low.
Keep CAT as an option if: You're already in graduation or beyond, or if at 17 you genuinely don't know what you want. CAT is always available. It won't disappear.
The most dangerous choice: Doing nothing at 17 because you're "not sure yet" — and then discovering at 21 that you want management, but your graduation degree is undistinguished and your CAT prep foundation is zero. That's the outcome that costs you the most.
