IPPE Hospital -- Day 3/5

Mornings stayed the same. Went with the tech to refill the Pyxis and she showed us where the pantry was to get free food. Then she left us (me and the other student) on some random bench so we didn’t have to do anything.

It was funny delivering stuff to this one floor because we couldn’t find the nurse, and I was like “OKAY. SOMEONE LET HER KNOW THIS IS OVER HERE.” because I don’t have access to the Pyxis. No one looked at me. No one replied. COME ON PEOPLE. BLINK AN EYE OR SOMETHING. It’s like 11:00 am on a Saturday.

I’m trying to get the one technician a job at my hospital. Really good worker and I hope it works out!

Day ended with making vanco advantage bags, prepackaging bottles, and listening to the resident complain about not having a life. Really makes me want to apply in a couple years. I don’t have a life now.... can it really get worse? (Don’t answer that!!!)

I can’t believe this is half way over. I love this place though!

IPPE Hospital -- Day 2/5

My friend was able to join me this week! Same old activities. Helped the tech fill the picker. Helped another tech refill the Pyxis. Helped the IV tech.... in no way. Just watched them make chemo IVs, which was a lot easier then I imagined in my head. Day ended pretty swiftly. Nothing too exciting!

IPPE Hospital -- Day 1/5

I really, really enjoyed this 8 hour day.

Started off with a tour of the pharmacy. Very quaint and small. Everyone running into each other everywhere. It was fantastic. Learned how to process their order into the giant machine that counted and stored everything. Was given a tour of the hospital and the 10-ish Pyxis machines that they have in the hospital. I loved the hospital because it wasn’t the most modern or new. But it had so much character and history and you can tell that people have been working there for a long time.

I ended up running up a bunch of things to nurses. Went to lunch for free since I was a “volunteer” and they pay you for that. I prepackaged some of the pills, too, which is one of my favorite thing to do. (If only they let me make some IVs! The hoods they had were similar to my hospitals!).

However, one of the pharmacists gave me a stupid project on crash carts, I think because he didn’t realize that I work in a hospital. He was a nice guy but I think I was in his way or something. I worked on the project and my packet for the last 2 hours.

Loved the techs. Loved the environment. Pharmacists were okay but really.... I don’t know. Like it was weird... They kind of seemed uppity?

We will see if it’s the same crowd next week. And my friend will be with me since she couldn’t make it to this first day. That’ll be fun!

IPPE Community -- Day 12 of 20

What I learned/accomplished today:

-- Met the student intern (from the other school) that is the same year as me. She is really nice and funny. And she had been working there for over 2 years... she really knows a lot! I was impressed. She is also very independent, which is making me feel guilty for not jumping at more chances to achieve stuff haha

-- Watched a lot of DRPs from my preceptor

-- Helped clean up the pharmacy

-- Hung a lot of bags because the one technician called out from being sick. :-( I hope she is okay!

-- I refilled the automatic machine several times. The one time I got excited and jumped happily to refill it, and my preceptor laughed at me.

-- I’m gonna miss all these people when I’m gone

What I need to work on:

-- Packet Update: All inhalations, 1 DRP, 5 Med Adherence

IPPE Community -- Day 4 of 20

What I learned today:

-- How to process orders, print labels, and send it to the pharmacist properly (wooooo! I’m like a technician)

-- Studied Anti-HTN drugs and DVT/PE treatment drugs

-- Learned what THR and TKR mean (and let the pharmacist know haha)

-- I was faster unpacking the order.

-- Learned a little about  putting in an order... however that was harder to understand because she was so fast

-- Finished my compounding section and almost done the “patient interview”

What I would like to work on:

-- Inhaler counseling (might look over that tomorrow since the pharmacist tomorrow doesn’t help me with my booklet)

-- Reading orders that are handwritten

*Note: the pharmacist today was funny because she was like “Why did you pick this store? It’s too busy here!”. I explained that I had limited choices in my area. Plus all the ones I wanted were taken up with the random selection of a machine.

IPPE Community -- Day 3 of 20

What I liked about today:

-- I got some of my Patient Interviews done.

-- I researched a lot of the drugs that I saw and didn’t know.

-- Customer went nuts in the front of the store. It was entertaining.

-- Delicious food was brought to me.

-- Great interactions with my coworkers.

-- Left at 2 pm.

What I need to work on:

-- Inhaler counseling

-- Slowing down the Patient Interview packet.

-- Counting a little faster! (Only did one today)

*Note: A couple days ago I mentioned working as a technician there, but my preceptor brushed it off. (Possibly because it was busy at the time.) I would only be able to work for like one day a week, anyway. On the fence about doing retail. I know it’s more money, but if I’m not happy with what I do, why bother?
