A Disgrace to the Game: The Dan Hanson Invitational
After a series of Facebook posts the quidditch community was made aware of the debacle known as “The Dan Hanson Invitational.” This “match” between USC and ASU brought about by ASU’s sudden World Cup qualification. Since ASU felt no need to fulfill the IQA membership requirements, like the rest of us, prior to their regional, they quickly found their backs to the wall. What resulted was a match where players were reportedly laying on the field during play, beaters throwing their bludgers into the air, and equipment being launched on to the field at random. As a quidditch player I find myself embarrassed that this match took place. To top all of this off were the “rumors” that ASU agreed to lose the match in order to convince USC to play. This rumor seems to be corroborated by the fact that the IQA Gameplay Department officially discounted the match due to match fixing. I can’t help but wonder if naming ASU’s Captain Alexis Bristor the new West Region Director was a wise choice after this clear disregard for the IQA’s policies and efforts to portray quidditch as a serious sport.
