Gestrument App Translates Gestures Into MIDI
When we hear about MIDI control and the iPad, the typical use for MIDI is to communicate with an external controller, plugged into the iPad. Rarely do we hear things about having gestures on the iPad itself being translated into MIDI. This has literally been the quest of one man on a small budget, Jesper Nordin. His app is known as Gestrument, and it was created to enable composers to use the iPad as a real-time composition tool. One thing that has to be said is that Nordin comes from a traditional composition background, meaning that his approach to music making might be a little different from those who are used to sampling and sequencing.

This app was designed to let your compose music using defined scales and rhythms which means that gestures made inside of certain parameters are guaranteed to sound right. Gestrument also grants users the ability to control other external MIDI apps on iOS, however, there are still some communication bugs that need to be worked out. In his short demo video he takes advantage of the iRig MIDI and he really only needs two fingers to get the idea across.
