@irisbloom asked: “ everyone needs someone. ”
things i’ve said as resident mom friend
“Not necessarily,” Law says, warming his hands around the porcelain surface of his coffee mug. Steam rises from it, at odds with his breath as it comes out in white puffs. “Met a couple people who were quite happy bein’ alone.”
Golden eyes watch the waves, the Hearts Captain leaning on the Sunny’s railing. Usually he doesn’t mind Robin’s company. She’s a calm presence amongst the chaos that is the Straw Hat crew. She’s quiet, thoughtful. Much preferred to the idiocy that often surrounds hims here. Definitely makes it easier to keep himself from snapping and just cutting everyone on this ship into pieces. But this time she appears a little more nosy than he’d like.
Perhaps it is because she has interrupted a moment of introspection. The doctor getting drawn into dark thoughts. Maybe a moment of him missing his crew. An instant when the mind gets caught in memories he’d rather not think about, not when there is so much at stake. Not when danger looms so close. Yet, he feels adrift, unsure of what comes after, if he even has an after. He doesn’t like the uncertainty. Perhaps she sensed that and wished to intervene. It really isn’t necessary.
“And if you’re tryin’ to say something about me then you should stop,” he adds, straightening. “I got my crew. They’re all I need. Not interested in makin’ anymore connections, thanks.”
Law brings his mug to his lips, sipping on the hot liquid. Anything outside his own crew is dangerous. It slips into territory he can’t control. And yes, sometimes he feels alone even when surrounded by his family, the doctor knowing none of them can truly understand his pain and what he is after, but his control is more important. His need to know he can protect everything he cares about.
