thinking about an irish jb au
Modern Irish AU. For the sake of his health, Christine decides she and Erik should move to Connemara. They play music and sketch and love each other quietly by the ocean
I wrote this fic in a great wave of feeling last night and it’s got what I think is my very favourite kiss in any fic I’ve ever written
if you enjoy it please do review!
DEH where Connor speaks in his normal American accent but Evan's reconstruction of him has a very thick Irish accent with no explanation whatsoever
i don’t have anything to add just know this is pure perfection
....well I added Amalia to it...Irish au and all that.... I'm soooo procrastinating Honestly Yugo sounds like chat noir lol
can you tell us more about your asoiaf irish au pls xx
absolutely ❤️ i am literally just making this up as i go along
tyrion and cersei went to trinity. cersei actually didn’t get enough points for her course (politics) but tywin bribed trinity to let her in. he was going to do the same for jaime but jaime refused to go to college in order to pursue his rugby career, which he and tywin had a huge falling out over bc literally every lannister from the dawn of time has gone to trinity
brienne went to NUIG
catelyn is from meath bc i am from meath and i feel like the tullys and riverlands give meath vibes (???) she moved to derry when she married ned but after he died she moved to dublin and is now brienne’s boss. idk what they do to be perfectly honest. maybe she runs a business of some kind, i can see her making seaweed soaps or something like that. maybe she gets the seaweed from brienne’s dad on inis oirr? ohh it’s all coming together
after bran was hit by jaime’s bmw he went on the late late toy show and told his story about never being able to hurl again and he became a national treasure, which made everyone hate jaime even more
renly presents the late late show in this au
at some point the starks went on Ireland’s fittest family and won, narrowly beating the greyjoys. balon and asha blamed theon for this, hence theon’s resentment towards the starks. also i agree with your tags about the greyjoys being from Donegal
hyle is from cavan. he is pursuing brienne in this au bc he heard her dad has a lot of money from the airbnb he runs on inis oirr (he doesn’t). hyle is a guard and plays gaelic but he’s not very good. he loves coppers and the 2 johnnies
arya is in the IRA
For the record, I do in fact have Thoughts about E/C retiring to Connemara. Most of these have been formed in the last two days.
It’s a little thatched cottage just in off the coast. White-washed walls, an open fire where they burn turf and wood.
Erik goes for daily walks with his violin. He sits and looks out across the wide Atlantic and plays and incorporates the music of the birds into his pieces. On wet days he finds sheltered places to sit. The wind whipping through cracks in the stone walls stirs something unfathomable deep in his blood.
Christine cycles and sometimes she joins him on his walks but mostly she goes on her own walks, sketchbooks and charcoal. She sketches the waves and the rocks and Erik and the birds and rabbits and wildflowers. She sketches the graveyards and half-closes her eyes and sees how it all might have been once.
Erik picks wildflowers for her every day, and winds them into her hair.
They don’t have a television, only a crackly radio that mostly picks up the Irish-language channels. It’s a Gaeltacht. Erik has never spoken Irish in his life but he’s learning it now.
They have a battered old wind-up record player and when the winter storms come they play jazz music and soft piano pieces and dance slowly together as the wind howls outside and the rain beats down and it feels like they are the first people, the only people.
They love each other quietly and gently.
Erik’s past is a thousand worlds away. He does not wear a mask.
They have a small collection of books, mostly poetry, some gentle biographies and pieces of fiction that have touched their hearts. They read by the fire, sometimes in silence, sometimes to each other, and Erik will lie with his head in her lap as she cards her fingers through his thick hair.
She cycles into the village when they want groceries, and sometimes to buy a newspaper.
They often lose track of the days.
There is always fresh baking, those times when Nadir comes to call.
id like to hear about this part from ‘oh call it by some better name’ for the ask meme!
“When Luke's bow scraped across the strings, Din's pulse quickened, and he quickly found himself holding his breath once more. Luke leaned into his movements again, like the dancers he spoke of, swaying with the bright, lilting rhythm. It started out languid and graceful, with easy movements and a playful push and pull of time, never quite settling on a steady beat. Then, Cal joined in with his guitar, and their pace steadily picked up. Before long, the tune had bled into something new, fast and frenzied, and it set Din's blood on fire.
The song ended with a dramatic stop, and the rest of the pub erupted into applause. Luke pushed sweaty bangs from his brow, grinning broadly, and Cal announced it was time to move on to the next pub.
Din froze, swallowing nervously as Luke gathered his equipment. He had the wild urge to introduce himself, but suddenly wasn't sure of his own name.”
Ooooh, I had so much fun writing Oh, Call it By Some Better Name, especially this part, so thank you for asking! (If anyone else wants to play along, see the ask prompt here!)
First little note: this was the exact passage I was thinking of when I drew my art for this fic:
Now, be prepared because I'm about to totally nerd out on Irish music!
When Luke's bow scraped across the strings, Din's pulse quickened, and he quickly found himself holding his breath once more.
So most of Din's reactions to the music in this fic are totally just me going "How do I feel when I listen to this?" I swear sometimes I too catch myself holding my breath halfway through a tune because it just sweeps me away! Also, I struggled for a while with trying to find just the right words to describe the special sound of this music, and so I just loved that word scraped because to me you feel more than hear an Irish fiddle. Its sound is just so raw. It gives me goosebumps.
Anyhow, I also took a lot of details from my first-hand experiences with musical pub crawls. For instance, this little bit of Luke's dialogue right before the selection you chose I lifted straight from one of my vacation recordings of musicians describing a 'slip jig:'
"It's very graceful, this dance, and it's fun to play music to—because in Irish music, dancers don't dance to the music, the musicians play to the dancers."
I love this because it so perfectly describes why the musicians play so fast and loose with any sense of time in a slip jig, particularly the first part of The Butterfly. It's just so evocative, the image of these notes dancing rather than being played. Anyhow, this bit of dialogue helped a lot with my word choices in the selection you chose. Everything about the first part of this tune Luke played centers around the movement. Just for fun, I'm bolding my favorite words:
Luke leaned into his movements again, like the dancers he spoke of, swaying with the bright, lilting rhythm. It started out languid and graceful, with easy movements and a playful push and pull of time, never quite settling on a steady beat.
Also, as I was writing this, I was thinking about how sometimes Luke and other Jedi are described when they fight or spar with their lightsabers, like dancers. So this is my nod to that I think!
Before long, the tune had bled into something new, fast and frenzied, and it set Din's blood on fire. [...]
Din froze, swallowing nervously as Luke gathered his equipment. He had the wild urge to introduce himself, but suddenly wasn't sure of his own name.
Basically, this whole passage you chose is my musical version of the "Din is immediately attracted to Luke when he sees him fight" trope. It's also probably worth noting that this is an Asexual's attempt at writing a wink-nudge of sexual attraction. (Idk how this is supposed to work, lol.)
Of course, if you really want to know what was in my head while I was writing this scene, listen to this version of The Butterfly by Celtic Woman!
(music snob side note: There are far better groups than 'Celtic Woman' to listen to for good traditional Irish music, but I seriously can't find a version of The Butterfly I love more than this one.)
