The Tagging Game

In the past 10 years I've been to 6 different countries, only 2 in Europe. 2. My first and last name now are not the first and last name I was born with, and I've never been married. 3. I'm the only person in my family, immediate and extended, to live in a different state (excepting my brother, but as we grew up 10 minutes from the state line, I don't count his living over it. I live a 2-3 day drive away) 4. I managed to leave college after 5 years with zero loans to pay off. 5. I'm a registered dietitian who's top 2 favorite foods are Pizza and Cookies. My Questions

1) Is your room clean or messy? Depends on who you ask. I say it's messy but others say it's so much more tidy than their room. I have clutter on my dresser but very littel on the floor.

2) If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? Israel. I won't go because of the war and dangers, but I would love to visit such an ancient place, to see the locations (or proclaimed locations at least) of biblical events, New and Old testament.

3) What is your favorite movie and why? What a question! There are so many answers to this, but I usually go back to the two I've watched the most: Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. 1939 was a banner year for movies. I watched The Wizard of Oz on a loop when I was about 5. I love the music, I'm still astounded that the movie was made in the 30's, and I probably have that movie to blame for my love of the fantasy genre. As for Gone With The Wind, I first saw it when I was 7 and have watched it just about every year, at least once, since then. What's not to love? Again a movie I'm astounded was made in the 30s. The acting was superb. It manages to be both overly-dramatic and well done. I am fascinated by the fact that I actually feel sympathy for the confederacy (something I don't usually do) when I watch it, and what I look for in a mate comes (in part) from my favorite line by Rhett: "You should be kissed. And often. And by someone who knows how." *swoon*

4) What imperfections or little quirks about yourself could you see someone loving about you? My friends say that my bluntness is the reason they love me. They know I don't play games and I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I've also been told that my addictive personality is endearing. Strange I know, but apparently I'm 'cute' when I start obsessing become passionate about a new book/movie/show/song.

5) If you could do anything you wanted to, what would that be? Like for a job that gets paid? I'd be a full time writer. For a job that gets unpaid? I have a desperate want to be a stay at home mom. For literally anything I wanted to? I'd take a year and travel.

6) Do you cry at happy endings? I'm more likely to cry at happy endings than I am at sad.

7) If you had to chose one mythical creature to be, which would you choose? A pegasus. Because flying horse, hello.

8) What is the one thing you most want in life? To be worthy of remembrance.

9) Where can you see yourself in ten years? Married with kids. Possibly also a foster parent.

10) Who is your favorite president? Theodore Roosevelt. Because, hello, we have "Teddy" bears because of him. (and I'm sure he was a good president as well.)

11) What do you love most in the world? God.

I let my friend give me a VERY bad box cut about two years ago. My fringe is still screwed up because of it.

..miraculously recovered before we got to our Head Of Year's Office (who knows about her panic attacks). I have suffered minor panic attacks in the past but I don't think I'm experienced enough to make a judgement. Please can you help? Sorry it took up two asks. :)

First part of this ask so I can answer it as a whole: 

Hey. I saw your comment on a post about panic attacks. I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about panic attacks? My friend claims to have panic attacks but the way she describes them seems a bit unbelievable to me and another friend. She has had two at school and recovered in less than a minute. One time she left the room because she didn’t want to be the ‘center of attention’ but returned after 30 seconds. The second she was breathing deeply but managed to run from the room and…

 Alright, anyway:

Okay I hate to be the blog to give you a wiki article but when I started having them again, I wanted to make sure that’s what it really was so this is helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack

As for as my person opinion, I don’t think I have any right to say what constitutes as a panic attack and what doesn’t since I’m not a professional. I will say, though, that people don’t seem to know what it is in general. I hear people say they have anxiety because they get nervous before presentations. Not a professional, but that’s definitely not what it is. 

Everyone is a bit different with these things, so one person’s may be very different from another’s. I thought the little comic thing you saw my comment on did a lovely job explaining what it’s like. Personally with mine, it starts out as feeling uneasy and weird and often not able to sit still, biting at my fingers (which is something I already do, but it gets worse), then when it really starts, I’ll start shaking and the whole thing feels very odd. Not like an out of body experience, but like I’m not really fully there. The more recent ones have involved hair pulling, the ones I used to get years ago involved picking at my skin (that’s gross, sorry.) I usually can’t speak very well or form a coherent sentence. It dies down a bit but will take a while to go back to normal, and I usually end up falling asleep, and then feeling a bit odd the next day as well. 

So about your friend’s, she may be prone to them, but knows how to tell what triggers them and/or how it feels when one starts, so left the room to calm herself down before it got bad. That’s my guess. Some are triggered, and others come out of nowhere, which makes them harder to get under control. If she knew something triggered it, that makes it more manageable. Perhaps she doesn’t necessarily have something enough to constitute medically as a panic attack, but some form of anxiety. Like I said, I don’t know a lot either but this seems like a pretty good guess from what I do.

SIDE NOTE: 

While I’m already talking about this, I thought I’d include some do’s and don’t’s for if your friend does have one around you, or just if someone ever does in general.

Don’t’s: 

Force them to tell you what’s wrong

Touch them, unless you’re sure they’re okay with it. Being crammed or cluttered can make it worse, especially with claustro or agoraphobia-related ones.

Force them to tell you what’s wrong. 

Do’s:

Ask questions. Not related to what’s going on. Just things like what’s your favorite color, what time is it, what does your room look like, things like that. It seems silly but I had a friend do this for me during one of mine and it did a really good job keeping me with it and aware of what’s going on around me. Like I said, it feels like you aren’t really there and very surreal, so this helps a lot.

Remind them they aren’t crazy and they’ll be okay.

IF THEY WANT YOU TO, hold their hand or hug them. If not, don’t. 

Ask them if there’s anything they need. And if so, get it for them. But be cautious about leaving them alone. A glass or water or a blanket can do wonders.
