I would definitely recommend starting with a lesson or two. Proper technique is SO important for swimming, if you don’t really know what you’re doing it’s easy to tire out very quickly without actually doing much swimming.

I like the “Total Immersion” program (checked out the book from my library). It has drills to help you work on technique, and includes sample workout routines depending on what you want to accomplish. My main problem is consistent pool access.

My recommendation is to just start with a time goal and alternate strokes/drills. I like to do 100 free, 50 kick for 20 minutes and work up from there. Add in other things as you get more comfortable!

Consider joining a masters swim program. Lots of them in the DC area, just google them. Some are early morning, some are evening. I did it for a while 2 years ago. They help a lot with structure, technique, not to mention motivation.

Total Immersion + masters’ swimming!

Join a master swim class, they will help you learn and inprove
Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I've started looking into the county swim lessons in the area, but it looks like they're at the end or nearing the end of their sessions. So hopefully, they'll open up some classes soon again.
I started looking at some of the masters swimming programs in the DC area, too. Though I know I shouldn't be intimidated, I think I want to definitely get some lessons and practice under my belt before I try to join one of those programs. I don't want to show up like the completely new guy who can barely swim 10 meters.

When you find out, let me know. I’ve been wondering the same.
Don't worry, Bryon. Once I know, you'll know.

My friend Allie ran too! I saw you in one of her pictures.
Nice! I hope I didn't look like I was aboard the struggle bus.

My old street is just to the left of your map!
You lived in Baltimore?? Do you like Old Bay, Natty Boh, and saying "hon" a lot?
