Game Session Five, Part Two.
what’s happened man? why no updates? i thought you said you were back from holiday?
Yes, I am back, and we've just had another session. Thing is, whenever I thought about DnD, I just planned for the next session (and even then, it wasn't as well planned as I would have liked) and so, no updates. Also flu. However, I am now going to write up the rest of session five in the next few posts.
The highlight of session five was definitely planning for the Battle of Albridge. I had written up some objectives for them to complete on the day before the battle, and so they did those, but more from their own planning than anything else.
DAR GREMATH: Perhaps you can help us with planning this battle. We know that the Iron Circle are coming from the South, with around 150 soldiers. The elves should join the battle, attacking the bandits' rear, shortly after. We have a hundred rebel fighters ready. What do you suggest?
VARIS: Dar Gremath, we have just found out that the Bullywugs are attacking from Toadwallow caverns, we suggest you put some defenses there. Where are the women and children staying? [technically, many of the women were fighting in the battle though]
DAR GREMATH: This could change things... How many should we station in the West?
MERRIC: How about 20 soldiers there, with 10 at the stables?
VARIS: We could set up a barricade at the bridge and funnel them through...
TORRIN: And if we place archers on the bank then they can thin their numbers...
The discussion continued for at least an hour. By the end, they'd planned exactly how many rebel soldiers were positioned at each point in the village, had planned for the bullywugs, put defenses in place at the stables, set up archers to assist the battle and decided to build a barricade at the bridge. I gave them full marks on their battle plans, which added a bunch of points to their victory point total, which would decide whether the battle was won or lost. They also got some by helping to build the barricade through some strength checks, and I got Vale to make a dungeoneering check to see if he could plan the barricade so that it was built well.
I was actually really impressed with the group here, as up until now I wasn't sure if they were really interested in the parts of DnD that didn't involve combat, but they did fantastically, which eventually led to the major battle sequence being far too easy, despite the effort I put in as it happened to increase the difficulty.
I had drawn up a bridge and a barricade map (although the players had decided to make a barricade, I was going to get the village to do it anyway, so I was impressed when they suggested it instead, although they chose to put it by the bridge rather than just outside the village, which was what I had planned for; thankfully the barricade bit of map was on a piece of paper on its own and so I just put it next the the bride and it worked quite well*) and the first part of the battle took place there. The Iron Circle marched across the bridge towards the heroes, who were more than ready. They waited for the right moment, then gave the command (to the archers) to fire at the attackers. We rolled some dice and three soldiers fell. The characters who had ranged attacks made their moves and the Iron Circle came closer. This continued until they reached the barricade, at which point-
Well, at this point, something quite interesting happened. Next time!
*I now have invested in a wipe-clean battlemap, which we used for session six, and is excellent.
