Wednesday, February 10: Iron Spell, “Torches in the Woods”
There is something heartwarming about the fact that at any time of day, somewhere in the world a group is making a go of playing heavy metal music, regardless of whatever else might be going in music at the time. Such is how we end up with bands like Chile’s Iron Spell, whose “Torches in the Woods” was plainly ebullient Priest/Maiden worship. Original it was definitely not, but there was such a genuine love of the music that seeped through every note that it was all too easy to get caught up in the joy. And though this was clearly C- or even D-team material, Iron Spell didn’t sound bushleague, but rather like a group of metalheads who decided to get together and play their favorite style of music, and that this still happened some 50 years after Sabbath emerged out of Birmingham was something worth celebrating.
