Any insights into some native american monsters, I'm writing a story based in native folklore and need some good material for beast to act as obstacles. Great lakes and north eastern ones would be perfect
Thank you for your ask :)
So I just want to point out that there may be issues with cultural appropriation when writing stories based on native american monsters/legends/myths. You didn’t give much detail (and that’s fine for the purposes of this ask), but in case you or others aren’t sure if what you’re writing is okay, here’s Writing with Color’s Native American related posts.
With that out of the way, I’m going to hand this over to Ajk’in.
Best of luck!

Alright, so I’m going to start with I don’t have a whole lot of information about this region, but I do have a few basic ones.
Stone Coat - a creature twice as tall as a human covered in stone scales
Wendigo - a dark spirit that posses humans, most often because they have committed acts of cannibalism. The human then becomes entrapped inside the creature which looks like a giant ice’like monster. (This tale has countless variations.)
Oniare - dragon-like, horned water serpent that lives in the Great Lakes and capsizes canoes. Sometimes said to have poisonous breath and sometimes one can trade or give an offering for their freedom.
Oniate - this one is actually a mummified hand that will kill, blind, or make sick whoever it touches. Sometimes the oniate simply attacks but in other myths it has a specific reason, such as wrong doings of people (I’m afraid I don’t know the specifics).
Niagwahe (Naked Bear) - a giant bear with an abnormally large head that eats humans. It has no fur and is killed by shooting arrows through it’s paws.
Kunenhrayenhnenh (Flying Head) - this creature is literally a flying head, although much larger than a normal head, and has long tangled hair and sometimes fiery eyes. Sometimes it is the head of a murder victim, other times simply it’s own species that eats people.
That’s about the best I can do with what I understand to be the American north east. Hopefully these help or at least inspire you and get you started!
Maybe some of our followers know more about these creatures or have some other suggestions for you.
Best wishes,
Ajk’in
