Hey man. You have a real drawing talent and are obviously very experienced with whatever program it is you use to draw. Your vector art is REALLY GOOD. I think you would go really far if you drew in your own style. I'd genuinely like to see that.
I really appreciate the words of encouragement, anon! But I also really can’t say I know what you’re getting at. Do you mean in terms of stop making fanart of Miss Selan’s design concepts or do you mean in terms of not drawing ponies and PPG style work? I guess I’d have a response either way.
1. The reason why I enjoy Miss Selan’s design concepts are largely because she’s the most active artist in the Mobsterswitch fandom and a lot of her ideas already pull from canon and her styling (hair style, outfit, etc) have become very accepted as the norm within the fandom’s art too. So..the line is a little blurry there. If Miss Selan came to me and expressed distaste in what I was doing I’d happily speak to her about it and try to find a compromise that wasn’t offensive to her. My intention has never been to copy (aside from a piece I still haven’t published yet that I DID get permission to do).
2. If this is about drawing show-style ponies and PPG style..well..I like ponies. The only reason I draw PPG style humans is because I really don’t like drawing humans otherwise. PPG style gives me something other than ponies to draw when I need a quick fix or get stuck in a different piece. Irosyan was a huge inspiration to me when he made the Powerpuff Avengers and it became even more of an interest to me to “powerpuff” things when I started getting plushie requests for powerpuffing fandoms. Art just became another extension of that. Ponies and PPG style follow a fairly simple set of rules that I find easier to produce art under. The simple-body parts and geometric shapes that go into ponies are super handy for someone who still draws with a mouse. I don’t get to sketch in the same way a tablet artist can. So I use Inkscape’s geometric tools and what I’ve learned about how the body of PPGs and ponies behaves to then fill it in from there by bending straight lines in true inkscape fashion. It’s also a rather untapped area of some of the fandoms I draw for and what deeply interests me. It’s not that I would never consider branching out on my own (getting away from show-style ponies into more of my own style of pony is something that’s been on my mind for a while—but right now I like the very planer features of show-style pony faces), it’s just that this is right now the style of art I most thoroughly enjoy and is easiest for me to get my idea out through! Which is a big step considering I don’t really even like to draw. This is the first time in a good 10 years (since high school) that I’ve bothered to start making anything that wasn’t sewing or sketches for sewing projects. If I’m offending fandoms with my cross-over work with other fanoms then I’m sorry but I won’t stop on those grounds alone. I really do appreciate the encouragement, and maybe one day I’ll head into new territory, but for now I really enjoy PPGs and ponies.
3. While I am doing a lot of Mobsterswitch art right now, if you look at my art tag to avoid the plushies, you’ll see I do a lot of different things including a lot of original characters and other cross overs. While I like ponies most, I also have been doing generic objects, I’m doing a living room furntiture set right now (I don’t think there’s photos of that right now though, they’re all on FB), I’m doing Silent Hill monsters, I’m making a Monster High OC..Mobsterswitch just happens to be a big interest to me right now and so a lot of what I’m currently having fun with is steeped in that fandom in general. And there will be more mobster ponies because..I really like this cross over. Ponies are fun to draw and are what currently appeal to me most so..I like drawing this fandom as ponies.
4. If this is about Mr. Leaky..umm..I don’t know what to say. Anything involving Mr. Leaky IS a direct copy since it’s fanart of Miss Selan’s character and he’s really fun to draw. But if she asked me not to draw him then I’d stop. He’s a really fun idea and drippy drips are more fun than anything in the world but protecting something that is completely 100% her IP is more important to me than that.
edit: I use ponyscape for my art which is a mod of inkscape that allows for power-strokes so I don’t have to make tapers by converting my stroke into a path and thus loose the ability to mod the line itself. It’s a really really handy tool.
gotta 'fess up, I was the one who asked this question as an anon. Cuz seriously this blog full of Powerpuff Avengers were the one that cheered me up and basically made my month(s) last year :D
