Five In The Morning

Here’s a little oneshot I wrote for my awesome friend @irunabara’s birthday!! I hope you enjoy it Iru, bc I totally suck at writing but I love u!!

Fandom: Vocaloid Pairing: Kanon/Len Kagamine

There was something different about the morning when you’ve stayed up all night to see it. Waking up early was never easy, at least for me, but staying up late was instinctual. It was routine.

What I wasn’t used to, though, was having company. Anon, my twin sister, was never good at staying awake– she prefers to sleep early, rise late. I’ll never understand how she manages to sleep so much. Since it’s always just the two of us, I never had anyone to spend my long nights with.

Tonight was different. Tonight, my sister and I were staying in an upscale hotel in Tokyo, where we were recording our first collaborative album. We, along with a handful of other Vocaloids were given large, lavish rooms with soft and inviting beds to rest in until our first rehearsal tomorrow. Anon was fast asleep before I had even finished getting changed.

As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was flooded with thoughts of tomorrow, and everything that could possibly go wrong. What if I can’t hit the right notes? What if I don’t get along with the more experienced Vocaloids? What if I forget how to sing?

Yeah, so much for sleep.

I slipped out the door without bothering to be quiet (Anon is a heavy sleeper). I walked into the hall, unsure of where I was headed, when my eyes met a familiar face.

“Too nervous to sleep?” He spoke softly, flashing a smile that reached his bright blue eyes.

Len Kagamine, one of the most famous Vocaloids. This wasn’t our first meeting– we’d collaborated a few times in the past, and he was always a pleasure to work with. He was always busy though, and we hadn’t seen each other in months. Still, I couldn’t help but return that smile.

“Is it that obvious?” I nodded. “But you wouldn’t know what that’s like, would you, Mr. Superstar?”

“Are you kidding?” He scoffed, smile still in place. “Superstars have it the worst! I don’t think I’ve slept since my first concert.”

We laughed loudly until we realized that we were standing in a hallway full of doors, on the other side of which were many sleeping residents. And it was one in the morning.

“Shall we?” He gestured towards the exit. I followed obediently.

We sat at the head of the staircase, sipping a can of coffee Len had brought from a vending machine. I would have felt awkward about sharing, but he was so casual that I didn’t want to make it awkward.

“So, do you always drink coffee with girls in the middle of the night?”

“Only if I really like them.” He was looking away, but I heard the smile in his tone. I felt my face heat up, and I struggled to form words.

I blurted out, “Y-you hardly know me!”

Nice one, Kanon. God.

“Hmm, I guess so.” He mused, twirling the empty can of coffee in his hands. “Then, how about we get to know each other right now?”

“What do you want to know?”

“Everything. ”

Len dropped his head onto my shoulder, and I watched his golden hair fall into his eyes. Incredible.

I didn’t think it was possible to know everything about someone in one night, but I couldn’t think of anything I didn’t tell him. I hoped that he felt the same. I trusted that he did.

We had been talking all night– asking questions, giving answers, telling stories. My throat was sore from talking, and the last effects of the coffee were long gone.

I looked down at my phone. 5 AM.

“That late already?” Len glanced over from my shoulder. He yawned and sat up straight. “I should be heading to bed soon.”

“I guess so,” I tried not to sigh. I still wasn’t confident about rehearsal tomorrow, and worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle being alone with my thoughts again. He must’ve noticed, because he took my hand in his and turned my face towards him with the other.

“Tomorrow will be fun. Miku, Rin, and all the others might seem intimidating, but they’re just like you and me. They mess up too, they get nervous too… they would never judge you for that. They’re going to love you, Kanon.” A blush spread across his face and he hesitated before adding, “I know I do.”

My heart pulsed in my ears, which were burning hot, and I stared in shock. I searched his eyes for any trace of insincerity, but all I found was affection. I pressed my palm harder against his, as a sign that I understood. He pressed back, a sign that he did too.

Before I knew what was happening, I felt his hand reach around to the back of my neck as he pulled me closer. Our lips came together like a sweet melody, and we moved in perfect synchronization. We held each other tightly, as if lettint go would wake us up and we would realize it had all been a dream. I was convinced that was true.

The faintest beginnings of morning light threatened to spill from the windows, but in that moment, encompassed in Len’s warmth, sharing soft kisses like precious secrets, I swore the morning would never come.

1. Favourite color? *booing in the background*

Burgundy and sage green.

2. Favourite mythology?

*slams hands on desk* Celtic legends! Arthurian, Welsh, Irish, ex... I really like their interpretations of fairies and their tales. People get cursed and turned into birds a lot, there’s almost never a true happy ending, changelings--it’s great.

3. I like birds. Do you like birds?

I like birds. I was compared to a phoenix once.

4. There once was a lady who really liked pink. EVERYTHING in her cozy, one story house was pink. Her wallpaper, her flowers, her hair, even her dog was pink! What color were her stairs?

The house is only one story tall. There are no stairs.

5. Opinions on Evillous?

They were the series of songs which got me invested in Vocaloid. I’m not very into the songs themselves anymore, or the story much, but it is cool.

6. Apple.

Yes. I’m in the hard-core club, thank you. I always eat the core. idk.

Nope, but I’m looking for books to read for class, so I’ll look into it? Eddie likes this book, right?

Anyways, I’m thinking I’ll read either A Nameless Witch or Jonathan Livingston Seagull next. I’m leaning more towards the later. Apparently it’s about a seagull who reaches further planes of existence.
