Target: 8:30 pace, stretch goal, under 1:50:00
The plan: go out strong, settle into pace, at mile 7 if you feel up to it, pick it up a little, at mile 10, push to tempo pace
Pre-race - no traffic, drove right up. That got me there 50 minutes early. I jogged a 1-mile warm up before start. Not sure if it was a good idea.
Unusual system of honor-system corrals. No one was bold enough to stroll up to the front, so I mistakenly thought the field would be weak.
Weather was near perfect low-50s degrees
Race - started good. First few miles above pace and felt good. Especially considering second and third miles were up hill. Two negative events transpired. #1, around mile 8 I decided that i wanted to use the restroom, i saw two porta-lets ahead and made up my mind to stop - and in connection with that decision slowed to take a gu shot. Well, the porta-lets that I had seen were off the trail, by a good bit, and I didn't stop. This broke my concentration and distracted and lowed me down.
#2 I did end up stopping just before mile marker 10. After stopping, I came out string, subconsciously to make up time I guess. I noticed my 7-min pace just as I was hitting the largest incline of the race. It was too late, my HR spiked and I struggled the rest of the way just to keep pace. I did keep pace though and ended on goal with a decent kick at the end. Not sure if I did anything wrong, other than that surge out of the porta-let.
Criticisms: had to pick up race packet in BFE Colleyville, Turn around for half-marathon was poorly marked. Lots of cement. Didn't know wehre to go after finish line for water / fruit. Wasn't well marked.
