Look, I don't even do romance myself, but all three of these people are clearly stupid in love with each other and should've all stayed together.

I don’t know if you’ve read anything else by him, but after being very unwell about the young lions, I’ve been reading rich man poor man by the same author, and it’s kind of interesting to me how it’s obvious this was written 20 years later because the characters talk more openly about sex and swear without the weird censoring from young lions. The lack of Jewish characters also stuck out to me a lot, because young lions is, to me, a very Jewish American™️ novel, while rich man poor man is not. But also shoutout to how it also leans into those same themes of “the cyclical cycles of violence” and “you can never go home again” that I will always eat up

That's really interesting--I've never read Rich Man, Poor Man, though I'd like to, and I know it's generally what Shaw is most known for. I get the impression that a lot of Shaw's later writing is less focused on Jewish characters and themes, though perhaps just in less obvious ways that in Young Lions (and even there, though I too think of it as a decidedly Jewish American novel, Noah's sections only take up roughly a third of the narrative).

The only other thing I've read by Shaw at this point is his short story collection Act of Faith, which was published a few years before The Young Lions and deals mostly (I think exclusively, if I'm remembering correctly) with WWII. I would definitely recommend it--like any short story collection some are better than others, but they were very interesting, and I do still think about the title story regularly.

Guess what I'm stay at the city until Sunday. Also something wrong I feeling after being at dentist, feeling a bit uncomfortable about my tooth. Huh.

By the way, I want to read something new. I have The Lord of Flies by William Golding & Irwin Shaw books! I'm excited but the annotation of Lord of the Flies says it's a scary story. I'm not sure.

In short we're have some important stuff for a bit for a while.
