Isolde: How could you possibly get into this much trouble in one day?!

The Eye of the Storm
Sirius often spoke of his family home as a kind of purgatory. The torments of his parents when they misbehaved were cruel. Both he and Regulus had a series of scars littering their bodies.
To many, this was a fair comparison. Hell and the Black home.
And the night that Sirius left home, the whole house seemed to glow red. He refused to be scared by his mother and father and would retaliate to their mocking insults with his own. They argued loudly and terribly. It was a war that had been going on since he was young. It never seemed to let up.
That night, as they sat around the dinner table, the air crackling with tension, Sirius could feel the countdown. His mother would say something cruel, his father would remark on his appearance and general lack of pride in the Black name. Sirius would make some sort of sarcastic retort. Walburga would use the tone that meant “watch yourself boy”, but Sirius always ignored that tone.
So, Walburga would most likely hit him across the face. A favorite move of hers. Then she would pull her wand as Sirius began to yell louder. And then the whole dining room would explode.
And within that dining room, as plates were shattered and shouts bounced off the walls, Regulus sat, staring at the wall, completely and totally still.
It wasn’t that Regulus didn’t want to help Sirius. It wasn’t that he thought Sirius should behave better or deserved his punishment. It wasn’t that he thought his parents were right about their treatment toward their children.
Regulus could only sit still.
You see, in an effort to protect itself, Regulus’ mind had adapted at a young age to create a bubble around him, one where no one or nothing could come in. It would still, unfocus, disassociate.
And the room would become silent. But only for Regulus.
It was the only way he had been able to survive.
It had started very early in his life.
Probably as early as eight years old.
His older brother was rebellious even then, though he did try to behave better. But their parents always seemed to find problems in their children, even in their young age. There was always something wrong with their behavior, their dress, or their speech.
And Regulus could never seem to get things right enough to avoid the punishments.
The two boys were very different. Sirius was smart in a way that often related to people’s emotions. Some people would say he had gained his manipulative abilities from his mother, who could contort and control people through words in order for them to feel the way she intended. It was exactly magic like we know, but it was a kind of spelled that easily ensnared any who would come close enough to listen.
Sirius tried very hard to not use his ability to harm people, like his mother.
But Regulus had never been very good at people. He struggled to speak, he rarely met people’s eyes, he couldn’t understand the shift in mood in a room very often until there was yelling.
But he was incredibly smart.
At eight years old, he had the ability to understand scientific problems or interject opinions on things he should have no previous knowledge of.
Alphard was somewhat to blame for this, considering his insistence on bringing the young Black boy at least three muggle books on science each time he visited. Regulus would devour each one, reading late into the night.
So his knowledge of the physical world grew, and his relation with people dwindled.
He would answer endless questions in his mind, wanting to get to the bottom of eternal problems, and as his mind went in these directions, the questions created a buzzing noise within him that would often overwhelm him until he exploded.
He wanted to understand how people thought differently, or how the physical world reacted to each person, because he believed it was different. That was why magic was given to some and not others. The world behaved differently with a person who had the ability to use magic.
But anytime he voiced his wondering thought process, he would receive cold stares and unimpressed expressions that sometimes were accompanied by a type of cruel treatment.
So he stopped asking question.
And created his own answers.
And his brain would allow him to exist in those answers while he was left in peace.
But when the outside world grew as agitated as his own mind was, Regulus felt like he couldn’t think or breathe.
On the night that Sirius left the house, as he tried to puzzle out different questions in his mind, Regulus began to watch in horror as the scene unfolded before him.
Sirius talking back.
Walburga raising her hand to him.
Everyone shouting.
Curses flying through the air.
His heart began to pound and his eyes began to burn with tears as he felt the insistent pulse of his mind mingle with the stabs or anger coming from his family.
He was usually able to control it, to make the outside meld with the inside of him, to fade the cacophony.
But it wasn’t working.
The noise in his head grew to a crescendo.
And as it grew louder louder, it began to develop into anger, a hot anger that would fill his whole body.
The anger, then, would turn hotter and hotter until it was blinding white. So bright that Regulus could barely function with it.
At the moment, then, that Regulus felt like he was going to explode from the noise, the heat, and the light, he looked across the wall, gritted his teeth
and suddenly, everything was-
quiet
Like silence, but not really silent.
Just that still sort of quiet, like the sound of a page being turned in a book,
or a pause in a walk in the woods.
Quiet
like silence, but not really silent.
Just that nice kind of quiet, like the sound when you lie upside down in your bed,
just the sound of your heart in your head.
And though the people around him continued to yell, to curse, to burn with anger, he was able to encase himself in a bubble of protection, one he was quite familiar with at that point in his life. And though they continued with their behavior, their words stopped being able to reach him.
It was just quiet.
Just for Regulus.
And the hot anger simmered into a feeling of warmth, one that he created for himself, to keep himself safe.
And he sat at the dinner table, enjoying the silence of his mind, as if he sat solely in the eye of the storm.
No one could reach him anymore.
Not there.
Not in the quiet.

“Yeah well, welcome to LA. It ain’t New York but pretty similar.”
“Oh...thank you.”, Buck replied softly, a wide grin making its way on his face.
Eddie could only watch him in surprise, the man in front of him did not seem to have caught on the sarcasm behind his sentence. People didn’t usually like California.
“Glad you’re...hum...ok? You want me to call anyone for you?”
“I don’t think they would hear you from here.”
“...what?...”
He was about to elaborate but thunder clapped and cut him off. He looked up at the sky, sighed and closed his eyes. He couldn’t believe he was about to invite a clearly disturbed stranger over to his house.
When did his life become a movie?
—Or, in which, Buck, a young man coming straight from a fairy tale, meets Eddie, a firefighter for the 118 in LA under peculiar circumstances.
