A few thoughts on the ‘XiYao toxic pairing’ (because this rant about two people who don’t exist in the first place is really significant 😁):

Okay so, I’ve been hearing this time and again and here’s my concise view on the matter:

° in canon, Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao’s relationship as friends and sworn brothers can indeed be described as toxic for the obvious reasons, but they’re NOT a pairing; the novel’s author has expressly specified that WangXian is the only couple and that everyone else is straight.

° XiYao as a pairing exists ONLY in fanart, and it’s only toxic IF the author of the respective fanart so makes it. Said author can choose to make it canon-toxic or they can choose to make something entirely different out of it (and I don’t think it says anywhere that fanfiction has to be canon-compliant, considering that the whole purpose of fanfiction is to bring something that is NOT in canon, whatever that thing is, and furthermore is a matter of personal preference and fantasy)
