Romania, at the beginning of this week

28-year-old male vlogger posts a video in which he talks about girls as young as 13 using words that physically hurt me to reproduce. A guy with hundreds of thousands of followers, out of which a lot are kids, belittles women with every fucking word he says. He is so sick as to say about a 16-year-old girl that she ‘deserved to be raped’. He is so sick that he admitted he looks at 13-14-year-olds and he only notices their bottoms and their breasts. Later on, after people start reporting his channel and responding to the whole shit he said, he deletes the video and a day later, he posts a ‘Oh I’m so sorry I was just joking’ video.

Writing this, I feel as if it’s some kind of a stupid movie scenario or whatever. But nope, it’s our reality at the moment. He made fun of the most traumatic experience a woman could go through. He literally proved that our fears, of walking alone at night, of encountering men on the street, of men looking at us as if we’re only possessions, are true. And not only did he do that, he enjoyed saying those things. He enjoyed tearing apart any little bit of trust or hope we still had that we’re living in a somehow safe society. He mocked our biggest fear. And after all that, after admitting that half of this fucking country’s population is nothing to him, he had the audacity to say he just joked. He joked.

About pedophilia.

About abuse.

And you know what’s worse? That so many young boys, currently living in this stupid sexist country, who nobody talks to at home about consent and respect for women and what being a man actually means watched him and agreed with him. And when a NGO alerted the police about that piece of trash, those kids defended him. Said we girls are stupid. Said we make a fuss out of everything. Said it was just a joke.

Romania, yesterday

Our useless and idiotic politicians voted that sex ed, in schools, can only be done ‘with the consent of parents’. Mind you, we’re talking about a country where the word ‘sex’ is taboo, you can’t say it, you can’t think about it. They even changed the subject’s name to ‘sanitary education’. Human reproduction? God forbid we fill the heads of our little precious innocent angels with smth like that. The same innocent angels that, because they get 0 education at home and, apparently, 0 education at school, laugh at rape jokes and find them ok. We’re the country with the most teenage moms in Europe. With moms between the ages of 10 and 14. By the age of 18, too many, way too many girls here already have 2 kids. Nobody listens to them. Nobody cares about them. They’re humiliated, they’re shamed. They’re invisible. They’re ignored. And our solution? We restrain our children’s right to proper education.

Can you imagine how badly a country fails at protecting its citizens if their solution is not to offer education? Can you imagine how lost we have to be to declare war to EDUCATION? How many more generations will have to suffer for us to finally wake up?

I’m sick and upset and angry and scared and furious.
