BNHA School Briefs Vol 2 Review
So I’ve started ordering/reading the School Briefs volumes now. Basically for those who don’t know they’re like the book version of anime filler (with author approved content). So basically Official HeroAca fanfiction.
I did read the first volume a while back but there wasn’t much to talk about, other than some Intense Todoroki Moments and a cute short story about Momo Tsuyu and Ochako hanging out. But I’ve now read volume 2 and I wanted to write out my thoughts on it.
Volume 2 is set during the Training Camp, before the villains show up. On the bus ride (first there’s some study antics for the finals), then in the girls and boys rooms during the night after training.
Dislikes first
1. Mineta. Like, main series Mineta is annoying, but School Briefs Mineta is basically Satan incarnate. Like, I never thought I would long for Original Series Mineta, but damn, Briefs!Mineta really shows you the difference there. Like damn, he can actually get worse. And there’s way too much of him in this volume. Last volume he was only around for a little while.
2. Filler!Bakugou is always defined as an Angry Ball of Angry and Hates Deku Specifically But Also Everyone Else. He has layers, filler writers. He’s #1 most popular character for a reason. Oh and Deku’s filler personality is also pretty one-dimensional. Mutters a lot and Thinks All Might is Cool. That’s basically it.
3. Why do the girls have to talk about romance during their slumber party? I mean, I get that that’s the cliche, but girls do talk about stuff other than boys when they’re alone, you know.
OK onto the good stuff:
1. This volume has some good femslash-y stuff, as much as it can get away with. The first part os set during Momo’s study party and has Jirou 1) Nervous about meeting her parents, 2) Some blushing and flirting between her and Momo and 3) mutual compliments like crazy. Also it’s a MomoKamiJirou chapter like whoa.
2. We met Momo’s mom in this too! I hope she’s Momo’s official Mom. And Mina calling her MamaYao is great.
3. The aforementioned slumber party chapter gets femslashy when they start talking about what girls they’d date if they were boys. They all agree that Kendo would be the perfect boyfriend (It’s 1A girls + Kendo, Yanagi and Kodai) - and yes, that ‘they’ includes Momo. Like, canonically Momo thinks Kendo would make a great date.
4. Apparently the girls think Dark Shadow is Best Boy. Like, I know they had them say that to avoid teasing any noncanon pairings, but that is so LOL.
5. Todoroki they all agree would be the best to date but Endeavor would make them too intimidated. With the overprotective dad vibe and all. (Especially funny since Canon!Endeavor is totally supportive of Shoto’s actual boyfriends. Invited em over to dinner and everything.)
6. Also Ochako says if she could be one of the boys for a day she’d be Bakugou. Interesting. I thought it was Deku you wanted to be Ochako. Although they are two halves of the same whole, perfect foils and all, so I guess it’s kinda the same thing.
7. The Pillow Fight is actually had by the boys rather than the girls. Way to subvert. Like, it’s not the sexy kind, it’s the Rivaly kind. But still.
8. Iida tucking in all his classmates is adorable.
All in all, the volumes are filler, but cute filler. Like, I guess the Leads seem a little one-dimensional here because it’s focused on the supporting cast. Just like how the supporting cast feel one-dimensional when we’re focused on the leads. It’s fun enough.
It ends on a nice note of foreboding.
