this fic was hecka fun to read, not so much to write. the first, extremely silly draft was written while on a red eye cross-continental flight, and i had to post in time for the exchange it was for. luckily hallie was really patient as i cobbled together this marichat/ladynoir fusion nonsense during the next couple of months :’)

‘weakness’ was first drafted more than a year ago and the strike meant i finally had the time to sit down and really rework it into something i’m very proud of. it’s probably my best fic to date and the one that challenged me the most this year. i never would have been able to get it to the quality it is without the help of my friends :D ♥

the strike ended near end of the november, but i was so stressed from the condensed workload and my own brain that i kinda retreated into writing fic as a type of relief. i started in on the pire noel prompts which i collected last December, with a brief foray into voltron so i could deal with my many, many feelings regarding aliens, and i really love i was able to stick to 300 words when i got most of them done (only 10 left!!)

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?

i wrote less than predicted, since i thought it would be around the 50k+ of last year. but this was also the busiest year of my life thus far, so i’m proud of how much writing i got done :D

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2017?

definitely voltron fic, since i love the show but i don’t really feel the need to write for it. the canon just happened to be the one in line with my pressing need to express my love for aliens

(i literally cried in my astrobiology class over aliens adskjafhlksd)

What’s your favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.

definitely ‘everything’s better with beanie babies’ because it features the agrestes being ridiculous and reminds me of crispy :’D

Oh jeez. Both these fics got way more attention than I thought they would. But I keep underestimating the ML fandom tbh. The first was basically me goofing around and I somehow ended up promising to write a sequel since everyone wanted one (which I...still need to do.....). The second was a flag for both my descent into ladrien hell and also a return to my nsfw ways orz;;;;

IT TOOK. SO. L O N G. TO WRITE THIS. Although this fic is firmly in AU territory now thanks to being beautifully jossed by canon, it helped me realize just how much I needed to grow in order to write romantic intimacy in a believable way. So, I made it my goal to work on it until it was up to my own standards.

Ah, the plan being put into action! With the release of actual ladrien eps, I had the perfect excuse to write romantic scenario after romantic scenario using submitted prompts. Which also meant I accidentally created a secret love affair AU and wrote more smut whoops. Still, they were super fun! I took a break halfway through to write some Inuyasha-inspired marichat that just would not leave me alone (also fun).

Oooooh boy. The triple whammy of Ladrien June, Ramadan, and starting my summer job. I was excited to have a month dedicated to just ladrien (as if I hadn't already dedicated most of my year to it lol) but fell behind pretty quickly thanks to my lack of free time. I aim to finish them this year!

And Ramadan. Man. It always sends my mental health straight into the toilet. Not because of the holiday itself, but because of the way my family treats it. Idk. I tried to flush away the bad feelings by punching out 'sins cannot be undone' in one night. And it helped, I suppose. It's definitely the rawest thing I wrote this year and I still have very strong feelings about it.

I'm never, ever committing to more than one fic deadline near exam time ever again. I nearly died last month as I rushed to complete these fics, my studying, and prep for my vacation that started right after exams (I'm still recovering;;;). The remix is currently the longest fic I've written to date, including my wips! Holy shit!!!

Both were done very last minute, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I tried to finish the last of the Volpina prompts before the end of the year, but alas, time was not on my side. Better luck next year~ :'D

Happy...? Hmmmm....There's stuff that makes me laugh, that I'm proud of...

...I know it's not published yet or even done, but...probably conjugal visit. Not only is it chock full of my favourite type of ladrien, it's...sort of my thesis on emotional intimacy? It's proof of my progress. I look at it and I can feel my determination to grow and to move on from the mental rut I was stuck in for most of my life, that I won't let my past keep my from recognizing my own emotions and learning empathy, not forever.

(Maybe that's pride and contentment and hope more than happiness, but I'll damn well take it)

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

I ALWAYS SAY THIS but...I really want to finish my wips.....and I want to start an actual chaptered fic. Not a one-shot collection or a drabble collection. Long, plotty, gen or romance (or both!!), chapter fic. I want to write something that will keep people up all night, lying to themselves when they say 'just one more chapter'. I think I actually have a shot at completing one now, at my current skill and confidence level |D

Maiden of the Mist

OHHH MAN THIS FIC. A PJO/Homestuck fusion that I wrote for last year's Ladystuck. This was before I started reading Heroes of Olympus, so I definitely would have shuffled the genealogies around if I had written it later.

I always wondered about the kids who just never learned about being demigods in the books, because after the second Titan War, that's not a thing that can happen anymore. And I imagine some kids would rather not know or straight up don't believe it. Like skeptical Jane. I really loved writing her in this, especially the last scene. Writing Calliope as one of the monsters in this verse was fun too. :'D

big brother instinct, my pet Noragami/BH6 crossover, was a pain in the ass to write because of having to look up the kanji for Tadashi's name, picking one, then combining it with Yato's naming preferences. Still, I'm really satisfied with the results.

BUT ROLLOVER REACTION OH MAN I SWEAR TO GOD REBUILD KAWORU IS GOING TO KILL ME. He's just. too sincere. Like animeworu is sassy and babyworu is a baby BUT THIS KAWORU IS JUST A CINNAMON ROLL. He's so good and pure that I basically have to change the ending because of him oh my god. I want to finish this fic in 2016, I gotta.

be a little boulder ficlet dump (march)

My first SU fic and probably not my last. It's part speculative fic (OF WHICH MY THEORIES ARE APPARENTLY COMING TRUE???) and part friendship/puns/fluff fic. I wrote it in two days, but I spent about week watching SU non-stop before writing it, so the characterization was excellent. I'm very proud of myself for that.

I started writing ficlets around this time, to sharpen my writing skills. The rebuild!Asuka one is my favourite of this trio, I wish I had the energy and ability to write a longer version of it.

Two AUs I've been nursing for a while show up in this dump. One is the Stargate/HTTYD crossover, because I'm still absolutely convinced the HTTYD movies take place on an alien planet ala Anne McCaffrey's books, and that planet might as well be one of Asgard’s. The other is an ATLA AU where Gyatso gets frozen with Aang and pretends to be the Avatar so Aang has some breathing room. (I'm still astounded this isn't already a thing in the fandom.)

INSIDE OUT FUCKED ME UP. Writing this fic was a lot like therapy for me, it was an outlet that I desperately needed. I got to put to words what I was feeling as I watched my baby cousin grow up (he's my little broson ok) and I experimented with the narrative, kinda similar to how I do it in rollover reaction, sort of blurring the lines between characters' thoughts and the narrative itself. I got some really nice feedback on it a little while ago, so that was cool.

It was around this time that I stopped hating myself enough to actually enjoy the summer. I started writing again, little ficlets to get me warmed up. I GOT INTO YOUNG JUSTICE AROUND THIS TIME IT WAS AWFUL. Roy/Wally wasn't something I expected to ship until I wrote it ok, Wally is just too funny, he's so fun to write.

DID I MENTION I REALLY GOT INTO SUPERHEROES AGAIN?? Jason Todd/Steve Rogers was another ship I absolutely didn't mean to get into but then I did, c'est la vie. My favourite parts of writing they fight crime was Jason's swears and making Coulson think Jason was another Hulk, that was hilarious.

Wonderboy and Friends is me wanting someone, ANYONE, to have Superboy focus more on his genomorph heritage over his human or kryptonian genes than anything else. Really experimental and really fun, I should get back into doing them again.

Haha, wow, Ladybug is definitely going to be one of my Major fandoms, that's for sure. More romcom shenanigans and some speculation about how kwamis would feel about their holders doing the do while WEARING THEM AND CANONICALLY BEING AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS, ADRIEN.

Also posted a lot of dead wips, including adult fears, because I got to stretch my writing wings with them, even if none of it actually went anywhere. The desert scene in the gen rex one is one of my fave bits of writing for the entire year, I really hope I can use it somehow in the rewrite.

THIS IS LITERALLY THE MOST I HAVE EVER WRITTEN IN A SINGLE YEAR. PROBABLY EVER. Holy shit, I know I made an effort this year to keep up my writing, but I didn't expect four times what I usually write.

Like. Everything. I got into a bunch of new fandoms this year, including stuff that wasn't even released yet, so I guess that was inevitable.

Hmm, that's tough. I'd have to say be a little boulder, because it's such a fluff fest and it's full of puns and I love Connie and Steven's friendship so much, I want to die every time I think about it. I love SU so much, it's such a great show.......

FINISH THE UNFINISHED FIC BUT ESPECIALLY ROLLOVER REACTION HOLY SHIT oh and I want to start up a Ladybug one-shot collection about akuma OCs and battles, solely so I can use the title AKUMA MATATA (i'm pun/meme trash, this has already been established).

A Honest Wish Part 3

A Hetalia/Harry Potter kink meme fill that was supposed to be about France/England Mirror of Erised sex and which I somehow turned into a worldbuilding, history-researching, England-denying-his-feelings thing. I have really mixed feelings about this fic since on one hand, it's really fun to write! I tried writing each part to match the time period it was covering and I think it came out pretty well. On the other hand, oh god why did I think I could write sex or France why past me why.

Oh, wow, hmm. I tend to hang out in kink memes a lot; it's a bad habit I picked up when I joined the Hetalia fandom a couple of years ago. Anyway, I started reading Homestuck in August and got inspired after I lurked around the fandom for a couple of weeks.

The first two are mini-fills involving Dave in weird situations like hate-sexing Karkat in the woods in John's van (to John's dismay) or dealing with Jade "Casual Nudist Extraordinaire" Harley as only a teenage boy can: awkwardly. The Dave/Karkat one is kind of OOC and dumb, but since it was my first Homestuck fic, I'll let it slide. I like the little details I wrote in the second one and am proud of it in general, although it's been soundly jossed.

I wrote the third and only real ficafter reading through Problem Sleuth. I just wanted to write something in a text-based adventure style so fucking bad that I went on the gen Homestuck meme to look for a suitable prompt. I think I succeeded in that respect, but it's only looking back that I realize Karkat and John were only about 75 and 60% in-character, respectively. Also the first thing I wrote exclusively for AO3, since most of my other fanwork-hosting sites don't support the differing text fonts.

Last one is a Homestuck/Hetalia ficlet that was basically eating my brain after I watched the Hetalia movie. I was trying to figure out what would have happened if the events of Homestuck occurred in the Hetaliaverse. Came out pretty depressing and weird but it was like stress relief to write it. Also jossed when EOA5 came out.

the comedian is dead

End of Act 5 for Homestuck was released; I had to write something covering even a sliver of my feelings for it or I would have fucking died. Another Dave-centric ficlet because writing him is apparently my thing (that I enjoy immensely). It's about his last moments with Rose in front of the Tumor, purposely angsty in a vague sort of way with seemingly apt references to Watchmen. Very, very pleased with my writing for it, not so much of my subsequent behaviour on the kink meme. :|a

O-Oh jeez, I can explain. An ask box fic meme was circling tumblr, which was where the first four came from. I filled them all anonymously because I am stupidly shy and I tried writing something I thought each recipient would like (which means Homestuck ficlets). I'm pretty happy with them all, except #4, which got the emotion right, but messed up on facts. Don't be surprised if you see me posting actual fics elaborating on #4 and #6.

But then I got hooked on writing super short fics and also terrified of doing my Ladystuck assignment, so I decided to open a reverse drabble prompt on the Homestuck kink meme. I'm surprised at how many requests I got and it really challenged both my familiarity with canon/characters and my writing skills. It was hit-or-miss sometimes and there were a lot of cool firsts for me, but I'm still having fun with it! Also, #6 got the most comments of last year's batch, which amuses me in ways I can't explain.

Finally, children of oneiros, my Ladystuck submission, which is about Kanaya and Terezi frolicking on Prospit before Hivebent begins. It took me for-fucking-ever to finish writing it (got it in only a couple of hours before the deadline!!). I had to seriously examine both Terezi and Kanaya's characters to get it right, since I didn't pay much attention to them during my first read-through of canon. I'm actually shocked at how well it's written given the time constraints I placed on myself. I have a lot of ideas for it that I had to leave out, so I'll probably be revisiting the concept after I write some other things first.

Total Year's Output: A little under 8,000 words. Not bad, when every piece I posted was five pages or less.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

Way, way, way more than I expected from myself. And that's not even counting all the stuff I've got languishing in my work-in-progress folder. There's six fucking pages of notes for one story.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2011?

Everything involving Homestuck, definitely. I didn't even hear about it until April, didn't read it until August, and now it's all I talk or think about. Also, wrote more smut that I would have expected (read: any smut at all).

What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.

Happiest? Probably tumblr fic #4. I really love imagining how the dynamic between beta!Dave and alpha!Bro would play out if and when they meet, especially since I'm convinced that alpha!Dave is going to join the dead guardian parade eventually. Delicious tension, mmmm. Also, I managed to convey Dave's misplaced anger toward alpha!Bro through to the reader, which makes me very happy. :D

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Write more often, as well as fics longer than a few pages. Also, finish everything currently in the work-in-progress folder and clear my saved prompts list. Also-also, write my own unprompted fics because jeez self, you need to learn to do your own thing without being directed by other people. Even if other people have neat ideas. ;)
