Our Children's Book
At first, I’m not sure if I have what it takes to write children’s literature, I just promise to myself that I will give my best shot. Thanks to the guidance of Sir Emman and suggestions from my course mates, I was able to finish my literary texts. On the day of our book launch, I realized that the greatest blessing we had is not the published book itself but the smiles and sparkling eyes of the children who listen to our stories. I wish that those who will read this book will feel the same joy.
SYNOPSIS: The Secret of Nalybel
Nalybel’s teacher in Civics and culture is absent. She immediately grabs her things and goes to the library. Bb. Ancheta, their librarian is sleeping. She gets the book and goes to the back of the library. After seating in a corner, Nalybel remembers the accident that happened yesterday.
She is a member of the Dramatic guild and they need the book entitled “The Stories of Lolo Bukno” for their presentation in the upcoming 25th Founding Anniversary of their school. Bb. Ancheta already told her that it needs to be repaired first but she still reads book. While secretly reading the book beside the window, a strong wind flew the unglued pages of the book. It was the only copy in the library, scared that she will be caught and punished by their librarian; Nalybel just inserted the book in one of the nearest shelves. Just like a thunder, she went out in the library.
When she arrived at home, she just ate the food her mother cooked for her then locked herself in her room. She closed her eyes and planned her alibi if ever she will be caught. She was able to relax when she thought of a good alibi. That’s when she also felt the air from the electric fan pulling her in.
When Nalybel opened her eyes she was not in her room anymore and she was floating in the air. She shouted and tried to move her hands as if she’s swimming but to no avail she can’t bring herself down. When she looked down, she saw a field and behind it is a mountain.
Someone called her name and when she turned her head an old man is beside her already. The old man was Lolo Bukno, he introduced himself as the author of the book. He brought Nalybel to the farm where she saw the protagonist of each story in the book. She saw how each of them just stopped moving while doing their works. Nalybel realized her mistake and ask for forgiveness. She asked what will happen to the people in the story. Lolo Bukno disappeared after saying that she has the secret to complete the book again.
After the old man’s disappearance, Nalybel fall to the ground, a very soft ground which is her bed. She woke up because her mother is shaking her. She hugged her mother and said sorry. When her mom asked her the reason of her apology, she just remained silent and her mother gave her a meaningful advice about honesty. Her mom also helped her to realize the “secret” she needed to do to complete the book again.
Back to the present, Nalybel is now getting the things (pencil, pen, crayons and glue) she needs to do her secret mission. She checks the missing pages first then writes the scenes using her pencil. She also draws the important scenes of the stories and colors it creatively. After rechecking her work, she writes and draws again all of it using her pen. The last thing she does is to glue the old and new pages together. Without her knowledge, Bb. Ancheta is watching her from a far and leaving her contentedly to finish her work.
The story ends with Nalybel putting back the book in its proper place with a smile saying that she already finished her secret. Thinking that once she arrived at home, she will tell her mother what really happened.

GOLD RULES by Lablynn Yvette F. Bautista
We sit; they say “stand up!”
We talk; they say “shut up!”
We play; they say “stop!”
We rest; they say “move!”
They are the rulers,
We are the servants,
They are the leaders,
We are the followers.
We call them parents,
They call us their children,
They say “listen to us.”
We say “how about us?”
