Loved this 15th century panel from Mamluk Egypt shared by @nobrashfestivity. Had to take a crack at the symmetries. Built around rhombi rotating with proportions to make them line up with intersections. The angles turned out to be the angle in a regular polygon with half the symmetry! Play in GeoGebra.

One of the notes on the original post is from an artist, @imyourfavoritechris, who did some cool studies of this.

I traced the pattern wrong in Islamic geometry class and the teacher (who’s also a math teacher) was flabbergasted. She’s had people get things wrong a lot when making the pattern, but they figure it out because things go wrong fairly quickly. I managed to go through all the steps doing the entirely wrong thing.

She laughed a lot when I told her this was usually how my math problems went in school, too.

Anyway check out Samira Mian, she has great YouTube videos and workshops on Islamic geometry. May your hexagons actually turn out hexagonal, and if not, may you have a beautiful and logical accident.
