Isopogon divergens

Like Banksia, Isopogon is an Australian genus in the Protea Family. Isopogon divergens has a fairly large distribution in the western part of Western Australia. This is an area with a Mediterranean climate much like that of California (a winter rainy season and dry summers). The narrow gray-green needle-like leaves give this plant a delightful fine texture, and the purple flower clusters add a wonderful touch in late winter to spring.

At a plant fair I spotted this distinctive upright shrub Isopogon anethifolius (narrow-leaf drumsticks). This species is native to coastal areas near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, where it grows in woodlands and heathlands on sandstone soils. The globular yellow flowerheads are made up of small flowers in a spiral pattern and are followed by grey cones.

#1674 - Isopogon dubius - Pincushion Coneflower

AKA Rose Coneflower. 

Another SW endemic, found in a diagonal band across the Avon Wheatbelt, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, and Swan Coastal Plain. A meter-high shrub that does well in well-drained gardens in areas with dry summers, and has been cultivated in Europe since the 1800s. It can even tolerate moderate frost. 

North of Bindoon, in dry sclerophyll woodland and gravelly laterite soil. It also grows in sand.

Isopogon formosus “Rose Coneflower”

Snapped a shot of this beauty while just walking around Thornbury. I swear, Melbourne is a treasure trove of stunning gardens and gorgeous flowers. I love this city.

Isopogon formosus

Like Banksia, Isopogon is an Australian genus in the Protea Family, and they are found in both winter-rainfall and summer-rainfall parts of the country. This one is Isopogon formosus, which occurs along the south coast of Western Australia, in the winter-rainfall area. It has the common name "rose coneflower", and has leaves dissected into narrow segments, giving the shrub an airy look. The flower heads are like pinkish-purple star-bursts in late winter to spring.

Isopogon trilobus

Isopogon is an Australian genus of shrubs in the Protea Family, not as well known as Grevillea or Banksia, but delightful nonetheless. The flower heads look like little cones with lots of little clubs poking out. This one is the yellow-flowered Isopogon trilobus, from the southern coast of Western Australia. The name refers to the triple-pointed leaf tips.
