Thoughts on the 2016 Olympic women’s marathon

I just got back from an amazing weekend and if I write about it it will only depress me that it’s over, so instead I’m going to comment on a two-day-old sporting event. That’s what the people want! I finally caught up with the women’s marathon last night on DVR. 

A marathon course incorporating 3 loops of the same 10K: From an organizational standpoint, I completely get it. From a personal standpoint, what torture! I suppose the US trial design was good preparation though. 

I’m so impressed with the US women’s team for all finishing in the top 10. I couldn’t figure out if that was a team first, but in my heart they all walk away winners. 

I appreciated that Shalane Flanagan was honest in her postrace interview to say that no, she wanted to medal rather than finish 6th. It was astonishing how much better shape she was in at the end of the Rio marathon compared to the trials -- even so, it’s a beast of a race and it was hot. 

Because I wasn’t live I was contending with the NBC commentary, which was not outright offensive (unlike some recent comments surfacing from other events!) but pretty weak overall. They kept picking out contenders and saying “she’s looking for a win” -- well no shit, Sherlock, it’s the Olympics. To fill time they repeated over and over again that it was a warm day in Rio, which again, no shit. And third, they couldn’t find a famous marathoning woman to add her take? I bet Deena Kastor would have said yes. Joan Benoit Samuelson? Paula Radcliffe? Kathrine Switzer? Anyone?

Another quirk of the broadcast was intercutting the women’s marathon with golf, literally one of the slowest sports ever (makes a great nap soundtrack). Could there be a greater contrast? 

They were also on commercial when Amy Cragg finished and never showed her cross the line, which they could have done -- she was fairly close behind. Hmph.

Planning to catch the men’s livestream on Sunday to see if it’s better. I have watched so much track and field so far and I’m loving it.
