Turkish police detained journalist Ivan Watson while he was reporting live on air Saturday.
In the video, above, Watson is describing the scene in central Istanbul, when plainclothes police officers begin surrounding him (around the 3:00 mark). The CNN correspondent, who is based in Istanbul, was reporting from Taksim Square, where he says Turkish riot police were on hand to prevent demonstrations on the one-year anniversary of last summer's Gezi Park protests.

Men and women stand with books poised in hand, reading silently, as a form of protest at the Taksim Square in Istanbul. The initial protest started when the Taksim Gezi Park was to be replaced with a reconstruction of the Taksim Military Barracks. A quiet sit-in in the park was interrupted by tear gas and water cannons and protests sparked off across Istanbul, addressing wider issues such as freedom of speech and expression.

As many as 300 people standing right now in utter silence in Istanbul's Taksim Square, @KanalD reports
As typical travellers, we were running late. The Taksim Square metro station was closed and we decided to take a cab. Major roads were either occupied or blocked by the police. We went by rioters burning car tyres and saw public buses withcracked windscreens. Most of them are decked in masks and goggles as ammunition against the tear gas firings by the police. While there were many rioters, there were also vehicles holding up Turkey's National Flag and also waving flags in support of PM Erdogan's AK Parti. The protesters are noticeably youths. Our driver was an older guy in his late fifties, and referred to the protesters as "crazy". Got to admit it was an exciting escape from the city!
