Yep, true story, and we know because of Google Ngram, one of Google's important project that tells us how often words have appeared in books between 1800 to 2008.

The Apostrophe

I was reading a book and I paused at an apostrophe. It was mute - a very gracious mark, unbent yet curved, still, yet dainty. I imagined dewdrops gleaming on its surface and then falling on to the page, in a swirl of water and words. I ran my eyes vertically down the page and in its scattered being, I saw a bindi gone awry, a beautiful smudge.

It broke words only to make them complete, it halved words only to make them whole.
