The familiar piano music chimed through the church. After a night of questions and interrogating, Richie was really going through with this. He’d never been sure of his relationship with Rachel, even before his return to Derry. He had no choice but to leave Eddie who was still recovering in the hospital. No matter what, he was going to regret that for the rest of his life.
Eddie quietly sat in a chair, staring at Richie. He tried not to look too upset. Clearly, he never thought his plan through when he got on a plane to L.A. The whole plane ride he had everything thought out on what he was going to say to Richie. But, he couldn’t say any of the moment he showed up in the church. Richie looked so happy kissing Rachel. It would be wrong of him to ruin things.
It was for the better.
Rachel walked down the aisle, flowers in hand, her veil covering her face. She looked so happy. During their time in Derry when they weren’t making plans to kill an evil clown, Richie talked all about how Rachel had been planning for her wedding since she was a little girl. Eddie found it strange how he never spoke of his feelings for Rachel.
“Friends. Family,” The priest started. “We are gathered to celebrate here today the joyous union of Richard and Rachel.” Eddie snickered to himself. Richard. “May the happiness we share with them today be with them always. Now Rachel, repeat after me. I, Rachel...”
Rachel smiled, though it looked more nervous. “I, Rachel.”
“Take thee, Richard...” The priest went on.
“Take thee, Richard.”
“As my lawfully wedded husband, in sickness and in health, until death parts us.”
Eddie didn’t know how much longer he could watch this. He was sitting right next to Beverly and Ben who held hands. They found their love story. The more that Eddie studied Rachel she didn’t look happy. She was marrying Richie Tozier! Who wouldn’t?
It was Richie’s turn now. For just a fraction of a second, Richie glanced over at Eddie.
“Richard, repeat after me,” the priest told him. “... Take thee, Rachel.”
Richie smiled. “Take thee, Eddie.”
A commotion of gasps echoed throughout the church. For those who knew Eddie, mainly the Losers, they stared right at him with big eyes. Beverly held her hand over her mouth in shock. Eddie must have been dreaming. Richie said his name. His name. At the alter. On his wedding day!
Rachel was shocked. The priest wasn’t sure what to say. Cautiously, he turned to Rachel.
“Um, shall I continue?” he asked her.
Eddie couldn’t tell what was happened. Richie took Rachel off to the side and they were whispering. Rachel nodded her head. A tear rolled down her cheek. She had every right to be upset. After a few minutes, Richie rested his hand on her shoulder, and he kissed her head. Eddie smiled, that’s all he could do. At least they could make up and put this all in this past.
Or so Eddie thought.
Rachel left.
The food for the reception couldn’t go to waste. Most of the talk was about the events that just took place. Most of the time, Richie hid in the bathroom, avoiding talking to anybody. That was difficult. Richie’s parents were here. They were quarreling with Rachel’s parents. He didn’t listen in intentionally to what they were saying, but Eddie swore he heard something along the lines that Rachel wasn’t ready to get married.
Finally, Eddie saw Richie emerge from the bathroom. He looked so handsome in that tux.
“Hey, Richie,” Eddie greeted him.
Richie gulped. “Hi.”
“Um, I’m really sorry about... what happened.”
“S’okay. We really weren’t ready,” Richie admitted. His cheeks blushed. That was Richie Tozier for you. He was sensitive. That never changed.
Nodding, they awkwardly looked around in different directions, avoiding one another’s eyes. Finally, Eddie got up the guts to what he had originally come here to tell Richie.
“Listen, Richie, I came here to tell you something else. I wasn’t coming just to attend your wedding,” Eddie explained to him.
He had Richie’s attention. “Oh?”
“I came here...” No, not dry mouth now! “... to say, um.”
“You love me?” Richie finished.
Eddie’s head shot up to look at him. “You do, too?”
Smiling nervously, Richie rested his hand on his shoulder. “I’ve been confused for a long time.”
“Is that so, Richard?” Eddie smirked in a teasing way.
