a drabble is a specific type of writing exercise that challenges the writer to write a complete story in exactly 100 words. this exercise pushes a writer to practice two different writing techniques:
to conceive and execute a full story plot with beginning, middle, and end within a very condensed and limited word count
to practice using diction and sentence structure in a way that is dense, deliberate, and evocative
point 2 is why if your story is even one word off, it is no longer a drabble. it is very hard to arbitrarily add in or remove words to reach a specific word count when a story is this short. a writer might be able to contract two words or separate a contraction if they're one word off, but even that gets hard when the word count is off by 2-3 words. it is really hard to casually add in or remove even 5-8 words in a story that dense, never mind more. the constriction of 100 words exactly pushes a writer to get more creative with how they approach constructing a story plot and encourages them to consider new and different types of diction and grammar they might not normally use.
this is why some of us are so pedantic about drabble = 100 words only. 'drabble' is not a word that was picked because someone thought a 100 word story needed a special name. a drabble is a specific type of writing exercise that loses its context if the story is not, exactly, 100 words long.

Everytime I read a disappointing book (which has been Very Often lately) I keep thinking of the 'thank u library' post. Truly doing wonders. Maybe I'm in a reading slump and everything is low-key Not Good but hey I'm giving the library circ stats and it cost me absolutely nothing
I don’t know what to do with myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
