How To Do Self Assessment And Evaluate Inherent Job Skills
Self assessment is process to know oneself i.e. value, interest, and personality inventories, skill assessments, and computer-assisted career guidance assessments. Self assessment helps in taking an informed career decision.
Job market is very competitive. There are number of people applying for same job not only from your city, but from outside your city sometime from other countries also. All have same/similar qualifications. Many have more experience and to compete with them, one has to improve his skills.
There are two types of skills such as: Specialized Skills and Transferable Skills.
For example, for a Software Engineer; Specialized Skills come with learning and training i.e.
Financial analyzing and reporting
Transferable skills are those which one develops & learns throughout one's life. These skills are learnt by adaption while one works. The skills acquired by adaption have broad appeal to potential employers and expands career options. Some of these skills consist of:

Make a list of all your past jobs and activities undertaken till date.
Write detailed information about each task performed in job or activities.
Write each skill learnt and used in performing those tasks.
For self assessment a person may pose following questions:
Who am I? What are my skills? It is a journey to know oneself. Better knowledge and awareness about oneself helps in taking right career decision.
Where do I want to go? It is comparatively easy to identify what one does not or may not want to do but it is hard finding exactly what one can do. Once it is identified, a person can easily target his/her choice of industry, organizations or companies.
How do I get there? The first step is to set the goal, assess oneself and then plan how to attain that goal. It may require adding few more skills.
Further to this, below questions can also be considered while Self Assessment:
What skills do I have and am ready to learn?
Where do I want to be next 2, 5 or 10 years?
Whether my whole potential will be utilized for the job?
Is relocation feasible for me?
How many hours am I ready to work?
Do I want to travel? How many times a years? etc.
To correctly identify one's career path, one has to know his/ her skills. A person can take various career tests such a Personality Type Test, Interest and Career Choices Test etc. It will help a person to identify not only his/her skills but also his/her personality, interest that make it easier to identify the career and job choices.
One of the challenges with self assessment is that a person may feel discouraged by the result of self evaluation. Resultantly he loses his Self esteem. One should take self assessment test only to self verify and use the information for self enhancement.
Other challenge is wrong assessment of oneself. Which will lead to wrong assessment of all others things? While taking self assessment test one should be patient and take time to assess oneself.
