This was kind of refreshing!

I was reading an article about the wood used in Maya architecture, and the white researcher was mentioning how he doesn’t trust what the natives say, like all these white dudes do. Ugh. But then the dude is giving reasonable reasons for double checking?

Like, it isn’t that he thinks that the Maya are untrustworthy and ignorant (trust me, this is the usually reason researchers say this. Academians are terrible). I was shocked!

Here’s his reasons:

The names they’re giving me are Spanish terms that are really general and can refer to a lot of types of trees.

It’s considered impolite to say ‘I don’t know’ to a researcher, so people make things up.

The ‘natives’ hired might be from quite a distance away, and not know local terms. Or fauna.

I’m trying to translate terms I haven’t heard before with out of date references, because there aren’t current, trustworthy, books.

His conclusion? He needs a local botanist! One who studies this sort of thing, and knows the language and local fauna!

Today’s been a really good day. My boss gave me a lot of good feed back about my recent proformance for my mid-year review and I guess I did great ? ( despite the two months I thought I did horrible but (￢‿￢ )

Yes Fairy Tail is about friendship and we see lots of examples to that, but different combinations are refreshing and appreciated.

as much as i love superheroes i think we’re getting too much of it now on tv and movies like honestly it’s a matter of time until this bubble bursts and people lose interest
