oops made myself sad again
Wrote a huge chunk of backstory for Nahne, realized it's too soon to reveal that much, and had to delete it 8D I mean it's still in the Nano file so it counts towards my word quota but I can't have Darkling's feelings toward Garren change this soon so there you go You almost got Nahne stuff but I TOOK IT AWAY HAHAHA
donkeynamedeeyore, does this do it justice? Also ignore the fact that I was too lazy to come up with all their other middle names.
A two-headed man sat between two paths and lazily flipped a key back and forth between his hands. When he noticed the group of half-bloods walking by his eyes lit up and he grinned, “So many half-bloods!”
“You’re Janus, correct?” Finn frowned and stared at the minor god, “What’re you doing down here?”
“Well, normally I go and give people choices and make them choose between the choices. They’re never really easy choices, it’s sorta just an entertainment thing.” Janus shrugged, his voice sounded weird since he seemed to switch heads every couple words.
“So…do we have to make some choice with the two directions?” Laurie peered down the hallways, “Like one leads to certain death and the other leads to safety?” “Is anything safe in this dumb labyrinth?” Holly grumbled and fiddled with her spear a bit.
“Can you give us a hint on which one is the safe path?” Zoey asked, “Like riddles and such? One head is always lying one is always telling the truth sorta trick?”
“Nah.” Janus shook his head and continued tossing about his key, “We’ll tell you the path to our left is safe, the other one is filled with monsters and is practically certain death.”
“Well, gee, thanks, we’ll go to the left then.” Drew sniffed, “What’s the catch?”
“No catch. You just have to state your full name and then walk on through.” The heads told him cheerfully, “If you don’t state your name then you have to go to the right path.”
“That easy?” Todd was not trusting that anything down here could be that easy.
“Simple and easy no catches, just state your full name and I’ll let you pass onto the left.” Janus shrugged, “Line on up and tell me your names.”
“Alright, seems fair enough.” Ivan walked forward, “I’m Ivan Calvin Carpenter.”
~state a bunch of names that I don’t feel like coming up with~
After Zoey stated her name she looked back and sighed seeing the Lake twins just standing there. Kit looked like he might be sick and Ari seemed lost in thought.
“Hey! Ari, Kit, come on!” Holly shouted, “It’s a simple enough thing!”
“Alright.” Ari put up her hands and turned towards Janus, “Let’s get this clear, if I don’t tell you my name I have to go down that right path?”
“Yes.”
“How deadly is this path? On a scale from one to ten? Would you say it’s super deadly? Like would Kit and I be able to handle it?” Ari stared at the minor god intently.
The rest of the kids mouths dropped open. Zoey covered her face and leaned against the wall. Glen shouted, “Are you serious? Just tell him your name!”
“Just answer the question, Janus, I need details here on this transaction that’s taking place.”
“It’s not really a transaction. I just don’t feel like attempting to trick sixteen demigods, that would be a little much for me. I’m having an off day, just state your name and you can go through. If you go to the right you’ll most certainly die.”
“Yes, but is that opinion or fact? Are you sure we’ll die? Kit and I are rather strong.”
“Not strong enough to fight the hordes of monsters that wait down that end of the labyrinth, it’ll lead to no exit and you’ll be killed.” Janus kept flipping the key in his hands, but he looked a little confused, “It’s a simple enough choice, honest, just state your full name.”
“Full name. Okay.” Ari took a breath and then held up her hand again to say ‘wait’, “Okay, but, do we have to state our full name given on our birth certificate? Like, what if we don’t go by that name? I never agreed with the name so there’s really no reason I should have to claim it as mine when I had no say in it, correct?”
“The full name your mother gave you.” Janus scowled.
“But Jamie went through stating his name as Jamie Tyson!”
“Jamie Tyson has no legal name and that is the name we must accept. You two have legal names.”
“Jamie does too have a legal name!” Ari was really fighting this. Kit seemed to have given up and was just sitting on the ground now. “You used to have a legal name!”
“That name belonged to a child who is legally dead and out of the system. Jamie Tyson technically is a different child than Janine Pechman.” Janus was twirling the key in one of his hands now, “Look, he’s a different story than you two, just state your damn names, half-bloods.”
“Right, right, alright.” Ari pulled at her hair for a moment and then took another deep breath, “Hypothetically what if we didn’t give you our full name.”
“Then I’ll send you down the right path to your death.”
“Okay…but how would you know I’m lying?”
“I’d know! I’m a god!”
“So, hypothetically, purely hypothetical, if I stated my name as Ari Lake, could I pass through the left?”
“No.”
“Why not!?”
“Because that’s not your full name. I asked you to state your full name.”
“Okay, but what if hypothetically speaking someone’s name was so stupid and horrifying that it should never be uttered out loud?” Ari smiled at Janus, “Hypothetically.”
“I don’t care. I’m honestly asking the simplest question in the world right now. Just state your full name.”
“Okay, okay, you were saying you were having a bad day, I get that. Could you see it in your heart…or…hearts…whatever it is you’ve got…to let Kit and I just give you part of our names? We each give you like…half our names, and then we can walk through.”
“Ari, why the hell are you trying to bargain? Just state your name and walk through!” Luke shouted at her annoyed, “It can’t be that bad!”
Zoey shook her head, her hand still covering her face, “Oh…it’s that bad.”
“Quiet from the peanut gallery, I’m trying to have a conversation with this god!” Ari snapped, “Will that work, Janus, sir, oh great and wonderful god of difficult decisions, who, may I say, is looking wonderful today, who does your hair? Did Aphrodite help you out with it, it looks wonderful.”
“No. And attempting to flatter me isn’t going to help you either. Both of you need to state your full names.”
“Can’t we get a riddle or something?”
“No.”
“Please! Make it as difficult as you want, just let us do something other than the name thing, man!” Ari begged, “I can’t say my name!”
Kit was lying on the ground and just staring at the ceiling, Ari motioned towards him, “These names were not meant to be spoken! They should have never been given! If we ever speak them terrible things will ensue!”
“No…they won’t.”
“But they will! It’s…it’s a curse…of sorts.” Ari was reaching for any sort of excuse at this point.
“Oh my god, Ari.” Irene rubbed her face, “Just say your name.”
“Shush.” Ari waved her off, “Horrible curse. I can’t say it. The walls might come down upon us.”
“No. Full name, or no entry. That’s final. There’s no other way around this, just state your full name given to you at birth that is clearly still your legal name. No nicknames. Full name. It’s is the simplest decision I have ever given someone, how can you be this caught up with it?”
“You do not know the horror of my mother’s naming skills, man! You do not want to experience these horrors, just let us walk through, please!”
“For the love of the gods…please.” Kit added, “It’s for the best.”
“No. State your name.”
Ari swore and then stared at her friends who were standing in the left hall completely confused. Zoey’s face was turning red and it was clear she was doing her best not to burst out laughing. Ari’s face turned bright red with embarrassment, “All of you step back! Can I whisper my name, Janus?”
“Just speak it! Speak it clearly so all my ears can hear it!” Janus was losing his patience.
“How good is your hearing?” Ari motioned for her friends to keep moving farther back.
“We can’t go that far down the tunnel, Ari, we don’t want to be cut off from you and Kit.” Clara pointed out, “These walls move.”
Ari clenched her teeth, “Yeah, yeah, I know, just…plug your ears or something.”
“Ari!” Half of them shouted at her annoyed.
“Don’t push me! I’m gonna tell him! You all just need to not listen and never hear this name or completely forget this even ever happened!” Ari snapped.
“Just speak your name.” Janus sighed, “I’m about to just kill you both.”
“Alright, alright, names, fine!” Ari pulled Kit to his feet and grumbled, “I’ve run out of loopholes.”
“There’s no way I’m saying it. Can we just choose the path of certain death?” Kit stared down the right path, “Do you think it’ll meet with the left path?”
“It won’t. You’ll just die. It’s really simple guys.” Janus rubbed his left head, “State your names. Just speak them, no whispering, just speak them at a normal volume like the rest of your friends did.”
Ari looked about ready to pull out her hair, “What if I spoke another person’s name? Like we spoke our mother’s name and our sister’s name? Can we exchange that for a ticket through?”
“Your own name!”
“Come on, just work with me here!”
“There’s nothing to work with! I’m just asking you to state your name!”
“That’s the problem! I’m trying to work out a deal with you and you’re just not budging. For someone who loves decisions you sure don’t want to make one.” Ari pouted.
“Name or I’m stabbing you both.”
“Ari, come on!” Irene stepped forward a bit, “Just say your name, it’s not worth dying over.”
“That’s up for debate.” Ari held up a finger.
Kit rubbed his head and shared a look with his sister. Ari groaned and took a breath, “Fine. My name is Artemis…” She looked pained as she paused for her middle name and punched her thigh, “Artemis Moon Lake.”
Janus was silent for a moment and Ari looked at him expectantly, “Let me pass, dammit, as fake as it sounds that’s the name I’m stuck with.”
“By the gods…she’s not lying.” One of the heads breathed, “What’s your damage, kid?” He stared at Kit.
Kit looked like he was seriously considering the right route suddenly. Ari elbowed him, “Just get it over with.”
Kit looked just as pained as Ari and took a breath, he just sighed out his name, “Atticus…Frodo…Lake.”
“By the gods!” Janus started laughing, “He’s telling the truth too! I’m loving this! Pass on through!”
Ari grabbed Kit’s arm and stomped through the passage. Zoey lost her control and was hitting the wall trying to contain her laughter. Glen, Irene, and Holly also were laughing uncontrollably. Ari stopped in front of the group and pointed at them, “A word of this to anyone and I will personally kill you. I know where all of you live and sleep. Don’t forget that.”
“Uh…Ari…your Mom really was, uh, hung up on the whole, uh, Artemis thing, huh?” Marcy spoke up happily.
“Please don’t speak to me.” Ari dragged Kit along as they started walking again.
Zoey was howling with laughter and leaning on Luke for support. “Moon! Artemis Moon! Daughter of Apollo! It’s too much!”
“I’m killing you first, Zoey.” Ari glared at her, “I hate all of you.”
“So, uh, Frodo, huh?” Glen poked Kit.
Kit gave him the coldest stare that Glen had ever received and he quickly turned away from the boy and walked quicker to put distance between him and the twins.
“Alright, calm down.” Ivan rolled his eyes, “We already knew that Ari and Kit’s mother can’t name a paper bag something fitting. Let’s just try and keep getting through this awful maze.”
