What if the boy who cried wolf wasn't trying to trick people, but was genuinely afraid there could be a wolf there, and couldn't express it in any other way? And what if he knew a wolf probably wasn't there, but couldn't shake the feeling?

And when people stopped responding to his cries, he began to think not only the what if there really was a wolf there, but also what would the villagers do if there was? Would they protect him when it matters?

And when the time came when there really was a wolf there, and nobody responded to his final cries, maybe he felt it was better that way when the wolf devoured him. And his last thoughts were how he knew now that nobody in the village had ever really cared about him, and how maybe they'll be happier when he's not around to cry wolf anymore.
