"Touch Grass"

I think we've lost sign of what this is supposed to mean. I also think the fact that we've lost sight of what this means is maybe the funniest and most ironic development imaginable.

This isn't supposed to be a dunk. It's not about telling someone to log off because they're stupid or wrong. It's specifically an observation about how much the preceding conversation or rant actually matters when compared to the importance it is being given.

You don't have to be a socially awkward nerd with strong opinions on the lore of a specific long-running sci-fi franchise to merit being told to touch grass.

For example: a die-hard fan of a pop star or idol group who has become obsessed with some hypothetical element of their favourite's personal life, whether that's a sexuality or an unconfirmed relationship, can and should be told to touch grass. Whether or not they are correct is immaterial. It doesn't matter if they're right or wrong.

It matters that it's something that doesn't matter as much as they've convinced themself it does.

When you tell someone to touch grass, you are saying,

"Hey. Look up. Look out the window. You see that bird outside? That bird wouldn't give a shit about what you're talking about even if it could understand you. You see that plane flying overhead? The people on that plane also don't give a shit about what you're talking about. What are you doing? Why do you care about this so much? Is this really the best use of your energy?"

If you mean a literal treasure chest I would be doubtful, but if your definition of 'treasure' includes top secret files that only few know exist then I'd believe you.

Cats are adorable and loving but i mean also very much one of nature’s most perfectly evolved predators they are essentially the Xenomorph to anything smaller than them there’s a whole campaign to keep people from letting their cats outside because the little bastards kill for sport so much it literally fucks up the ecosystem so i mean it’s you know death-worshipping monster and adorable vibrating cuddle buddy are not mutually exclusive the trick just kinda depends on where you stand

I have to say, one thing that impresses me a lot in your writing (having recently read through a whole bunch of it) is your ability towrite characters that aren't necessarily "bad" or "evil" people, but are frustrating, hung up on something, inconsiderate and/or acting pretty shitty. See Captain Grant in The Stranding, or Daphne's friends in The Faerie Spell. It makes your writing really enjoyable because the interpersonal complications your characters face are surprisingly relatable - the situations may be fantastical but the people they're dealing with feel like people you could meet, and be frustrated by, in real life.

Thank you SO MUCH for this compliment, because it hits me really... directly, every time, if that makes sense. If I'm writing a character that's heavily involved in the story, whether we ever get into their direct perspective or not narratively, I have to be in their perspective at least a little to justify what they're doing. These characters in some way or another all have to be people I can understand from SOME angle and to some deep degree.

You wind up in positions in real life all the time, even with people you care about and love, where they are acting not necessarily against you but in a way that upsets you because it's hard to see where they're coming from. Hell, even when you CAN see where they're coming from, technically, they will make a decision that is wildly different to one that you (or hell, maybe everyone else) would make.

It can be a fun exercise sometimes for me to put two people who do not think the same and are opposed on a few key points (Henry and Daniel~) and then give them the SAME GOAL and watch them still fucking fight about it. Both people screaming "we could be DONE THIS if you would just DO IT THE WAY I WOULD" and them being so fundamental opposed to the other way of doing it that they have to hack and slash at both options until there's some kind of compromise that gets them there.

Daphne's friends THINK they're being good! They think they're doing good shit and being good friends because in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR MINDS they can think of all these horrible examples that they've either witnessed or heard of or lived through that they think would be worse. And they're not doing that! So they must be being good! They never think of Daphne's experiences and her needs, they just think "at least I'm not being worse, right?" and stop it there, and they all have their own knee-jerk reactions to being made to feel like they aren't being good, because if you aren't being good then you're being bad.
