Rewatching Lord of the Rings after years. In segments this week. And I'm stuck by how resonant it is to the war in Ukraine.

Even mom (we are both home now bc we expected to go on a day trip w my sister but she's sick) said when Merry was talking to the ents. How they think it doesn't affect them bc they're further removed from it. But you're part of this world! - we may be far from the war but it doesn't mean they don't matter! And it may eventually affect you directly if the evil isn't stopped! (Thankfully we are realizing sooner than World War 2, perhaps bc of the memory of it, how this is a clear war of expansion and it will affect more than Ukraine if the destructive empire isn't stopped)

And the women and kids hiding in Helms Deep are so similar to images of people hiding in bomb shelters.

It's not just history (which in part inspired Tolkien to write the books-- history he saw and experienced when it was not history but the present) but happening now. Evil wasn't vanquished forever but crawls back to life in a different form.

And especially Sam's speech. All of it was so relevant to now, I cried thru the whole thing.
