Man, I forgot to post my best fanarts from 2024 here so here they are, representing each month!
Top 10 Worst Cartoon Cliches
#10. The Obsessive Crush: Crushes in general are awkward and not fun to deal with in real life. Admiring someone is one thing, but it's foolish to believe you're in love with that person when you don't even know them. In cartoons, crushes are exaggerated to the point of being more in line with obsession. Characters like Marinette from Miraculous Ladybug, Jackie from Kick Buttowski, and Oscar from Fish Hooks come off as creeps who have unhealthy obsessions with their crushes. They track their every move, draw fanart of them together, daydream about them, it gets to a point were it stops being cute and starts being cringe.
#9. Explaining The Joke: Joker sums it up in the gif above, but to add to it, it's just insulting to the audience's intelligence. Having characters explain what context of the joke is right after the punchline not only makes the characters look desperate and stupid, but also insinuates that the audience is too stupid to know they were supposed to laugh. This happens a lot in cartoons, like in Strawberry Shortcake: Berry In The Big City, Hailey's On It, Hamster & Gretel, and Cleopatra In Space. If the audience doesn't laugh at a joke, it's not because they're not smart enough to know what you're talking about. It's because the joke was either poorly set up or it just wasn't very funny. There's never a good reason to explain the joke.
#8. Apathetic/Bad Teachers: Often cartoons tend to do the inverse of what happens in reality for comedic effect. This doesn't always work because it's not always funny and can paint a really poor picture of what the subject their subverting is actually like. Such is the case for teachers. I can count on one hand the number of teachers in cartoons that actually like their job and are very good at it (Mr. Simmons from Hey Arnold, Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, Mr. Greene from The Powerpuff Girls, and Miss Grokie from Recess). Often, teachers in cartoons are portrayed as apathetic at best or despicable at worst. People like Miss Siman, Denzel Crocker, Eda (Owl House), Mr. Wilter (Chalk Zone), Mr. Muffin (Fanboy and ChumChum), and Ms. Bitters (Invader Zim) very clearly hate kids or at the very least would rather be doing anything else besides teaching kids. These characters give actual teachers a bad name and their students deserve so much better.
#7. Calling The Pet/Non-Pet Character By Their Species Name: There are millions of names you could call your pet. Among the names you SHOULDN'T, though, is naming them after their species. This is a lazy practice that makes it hard to properly identify your pet should they get lost or need to go to the vet. Cartoons adopt this practice often but it's never ironic and it makes the owner look lazy. The hamster from Hamster & Gretel is just named Hamster, the pony from It's Pony is just named Pony, the horse from Centaurworld is just called Horse, and the dog from Family Dog is just called Dog. It's even more obnoxious when not pet characters are named after their species, such as Hedgehog from Summer Camp Island, Ape from George of the Jungle, and all of Franklin's friends such as Bear, Rabbit, Fox, Snail, and Beaver. In my honest opinion, every character should have a proper name. No matter how minor of a role they have, they shouldn't be called by their species. It'd be like naming a kid Human.
#6. The Socially Inept Child Prodigy: I remember when Allison Pregler aka Obscurous Lupa made a review of the shameless Harry Potter rip-off, The Mythical Adventures Of Billy Owens, and her critique of the discount Hermonie character is really fitting here. "Just because someone has a brain that doesn't mean they lack human social skills." This is precisely my standpoint when it comes to how child prodigies are portrayed in cartoons. From Dexter to Jimmy Neutron, to Lunella Lafayette, to Chloe Park, it's really annoying to see really these kids lack basic social skills when they're supposed to be really smart. I recognize the stories in their shows require conflict, but conflict born out of the gross incompetence of the characters is bad storytelling. Trust me, I know.
#5. The Spoiled Brat: I'll go into more detail in a later post, but here's the rub. Cartoons often exaggerate what it's like being part of a wealthy family, yet in almost every case they make the children of wealthy families look bad. They also make younger siblings the most obnoxious and despicable characters as a result of favoritism. Characters like Gem Stone (Sabrina The Animated Series), Sarah (Ed, Edd n Eddy), Amity (The Owl House) and Andrea Davenport (The Ghost and Molly McGee) are all prime examples of despicable, spoiled little neerdowells whose rank attitudes should repell everyone within a 5 block radius.
#4. Bully Crush: A number of cartoons are guilty of reinforcing the misconception that if someone is picking on you that means they secretly like you. This line of thinking is dangerous as it makes bullying seem cute and a sign of affection. But let's not get it twisted, bullying is inexcusable regardless of a person's feelings. Characters like Helga Pataki, Amity, Ronnie Ann (The Loud House), or the Kankers shouldn't be given a pass for being nasty to the main character. If the rolls were reversed and the main character was picking on these kids, would you honestly buy the "they're bullying them because they like them" malarkey? I don't think so!
#3. Dated slang/memes: I've talked in detail already about how much I hate dated slang and memes in fiction, especially in cartoons (read here: https://www.tumblr.com/a34trgv2/805949718206234624/the-problem-with-dated-slang-and-memes-in?source=share). To summarize, cartoons should strive to be timeless and they fail immediately when they use slang and memes from the time period they were made in. The latter seasons of Fairly Oddparents, Zokie of Planet Ruby, Young Love, Hey A.J., Powerpuff Girls (2016) and Lego Eleves: Secrets of Elvendale are all guilty of incorporating slang and memes that were popular when the episodes were conceived but have been long outdated upon the episodes release. This makes the creators of these shows grossly out of touch with their audience and makes the end product Cringe with a capital C.
#2. Bad Parenting: This cliche is so prevalent across cartoons it's actually stupid. I get cartoons exaggerate and subvert what happens in reality, but after watching cartoons for over 25 years, bad parenting seems to be more commonplace than subversive. There are only a handful of good parents in cartoons, and even less so that are consistently good. It's now to be expected that the father is a moron, the mother is a nag, or the legal guardian is irresponsible. From infamous examples such as Mr. and Mrs. Turner, to Peter Griffin, to Homer Simpson, to Rick Sanchez, to even recent examples such as Celine (KPop Demon Hunters), Grunkle Stan, Rick (The Mitchells vs The Machines), and Stephen Love from Young Love. If you were to make a cartoon and the main character had parents that weren't despicable, stupid, or dead and were helpful, caring, funny, and kind, that would be considered abnormal.
#1. Exposition dumping: This is the one sure fire way to kill my interest in a cartoon. The whole point of animation is to help convey the story with visuals. Ergo, having characters stand around talking about lore or plot details is a waste of valuable resources as well as the audience's time. I can give some leeway to cartoons that were made in the medium's infancy or when they started being produced for television in the late 50s/early 60s. But it’s 2026, people! Most cartoons are animated digitally and there's more animators now than ever. I shouldn't still be watching cartoons that maintain the limited resources mindset of the 60s. Shows like Kipo and the Age Of Wonderbeasts, Centaurworld, Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, Mech Cadets, and Cleopatra In Space should not be using exposition dumps when they have the resources, the manpower, and ample opportunity to let the visuals do the talking. I've never made a cartoon before, but characters standing around spouting exposition makes producing a cartoon look easy (and I know for a fact that it's not).
Conclusion: These cliches only serve to make cartoons look bad. And they've been done to death by this point, I just don't see how they can be made fresh again. Dishonorable mentions go to bad friends (they might as well be enemies), the stupid, irresponsible girl (given girls a bad name since who knows when), character's acting out of character (because simply making a new character was too easy) and grown men voicing non-caricature boys (I will never get over Michael Rianda voicing Aaron from The Mitchells vs The Machines). What are some of your least favorite cliches in animation? Sound off in the comments below. Thanks so much for reading and I'll see you next time ;)

Restaurant Idea: The Nicktoons Diner
I'm sure just about all of you are familiar with The Krabby Patty Kollab Wendy's launched back in October, commemorating of the 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants.
I tried for myself on opening day, and I really liked it.
But it did get me thinking about this....
What if there was a restaurant that was themed around not just SpongeBob, but all the Nicktoons in general.
And thus, I created the idea known as.....
THE NICKTOONS DINER!
If the name didn't clue you in already, this restaurant would be a diner, ala Steak n' Shake, Big Boy, and Denny's.
But with a Nickelodeon theming.
Layout is what you would expect from a diner.
There's the dining area with tables, booths, and a counter that you can sit and eat at.
And like any diner, you'll get a decent view of the kitchen.
The diner is also a drive-in, so you can eat in your own car.
Plus they'll actually provide a little disposable table for you to use while eating.
The dining area itself would be sporting a Nickelodeon theming, with orange and green colored chairs and a design of multicolored splats all over the floor.
And on the walls, you'll several pieces of art featuring hundreds of Nicktoon characters, dressed as workers of the diner and depicting them as working at the diner as well!
Now let's for the real meat of this post, the menu!
