Mako walks on the crowded sidewalk on his way home after a busy day at work. Hands in his coat pockets, scarf pulled up to his nose.
It's been getting colder lately. As the days crawl by, snow begins to drift in more constantly.
He mindlessly walks down the path he follows everyday, not bothering to look a the restaurants he passes, or the clothes displayed in front of boutiques.
He falters in his steps for a moment, looking across the street. A woman with short hair walks on the other side of the street. His heart stops for some reason.
The woman adorns short hair, tips just barely grazing her shoulders. A loose cream colored sweater is draped on her body, paired with black jeans and boots.
The woman is stunningly beautiful, and although her hair is short, his heart knows who it is. She may look a little different, but his heart recognizes her, no matter how much time has passed. He knows her.
Heart pounding, thoughts whirrling thousands of miles per second, he runs to the crosswalk, and anxiously waits for the signal to allow him to cross the street safely. The crosswalk light tuns green and he quickly weaces in between the other pedestrians. He can't lose her. Not again.
He makes it to the other side of the street safely and raises on the tips of his toes to look above the sea of people in hopes of seeing her again. She wlaks past a small bookstore and Mako begins makung his way to her, doing his best not to knock anyone over. He gives a few apologies when he brushes past people. He quickens his pace, making his way out of a large group of people and sees her. He stops walking, just shy of a few feet from her.
The woman turns around; shocked expression immediately softening with a look only reserved for him.
"Mako," she says warmly, as she steps closer to him.
She embraces him and Mako wraps his arms around her. His heart finally feels light. He feels at home again.
In fact, he doesn't think he's ever stopped. In spite of himself and how much he's buried himself in his work, trying to move on from her and dull his heartache, he's always loved her. He always will. And nothing could remedy his heavy heart except for her.
He smiles brightly as he embraces her tighter.
