The real problem with code geass is that it DOES have something other shows can't replicate. You will never find a pair of characters THAT insane about one another in any higher quality piece of work! Better writing simply does not allow for it! What this show does, right, repeatedly, is sacrifice absolutely everything else it has going on on the altar of making Suzaku and Lelouch even more obsessively deranged over one another. You get the most absurd contrived situations just for the sake of allowing those two to escalate a relationship that has seemingly escalated as far as it can. And you get this every time they're on screen, without fail, and you get it at the expense of absolutely everything else. And it works!! It's actually (infuriatingly) compelling as FUCK!! It's a showstopping work of art in it's own right. It's just not GOOD
