Also been thinking a lot about how Dave flirts and has low key crushes on all his friends (clingy and starved for attention/affection) but why specifically it manifests the most with Jade. Like there’s definitely compulsory het/gay repression at work here (and all the kids basically have the easiest time talking to her) but I think there’s a lot more to it that says stuff about his character?

I always think back to when she entered The Medium and how she asked him for advice and how good that must have made Dave feel.

From there Dave sort of underestimates Jade for the rest of their game, understanding her as being silly and more of a detriment to the party (even though its JADE who figured out how to get them to the Alpha Session). And I really honestly believe that Dave ended up having a special bond with Jade (his words) the most because he interpreted her as the one that needed him the most?

Like Dave is a Knight, support character, he’s got to be needed because if he can’t boost his self esteem by performing to the level of a hero like John than at least somebody can depend on him (aka is in a greater position of vulnerability). And Jade’s PROJECTED self is the choicest pick for toxic masculinity ego stroking, she’s quirky and spacey but just capable enough not to be annoying (pls note im only talking about her shallow outward persona).

And I just think that’s one of the most interesting things about Homestuck’s writing is how it captures the experience of people who are Very Best Friends getting so in the way of understanding one another and that just because you love people doesn’t always mean you really Get Them. It’s good.

SO! In TDATH series (third book, I think? Lol haven't even written it but I'm going over notes) Arthur meets Mordred when he's like four years old and he's like "Okay, Yeah, I'm gonna foster him now BYE" and keeps him with him at all times, during council meetings, at feasts, gives him his first play sword, he's there when Mordred has a nightmare despite he himself having them. He's TRYING to be a good foster father to this nugget.

That is so sweet! I'm imagining Arthur going through battle plans while little Mordred is up on his shoulders and I think my heart melted. Thank you!
