Flora & Smell

Data measurement

For this project we measured the pollen of different kind of flora in Copenhagen for one day. We used the pollen index to indicate how much pollen there is in the air. Pollen highlights the interaction between humans and plants in a very obvious way, given that it causes allergies in people.

Experience

When we walk through the city, or countryside, we don’t think about breathijng pollen, we just breath. However, with every breath we consume large amounts of pollen unknowingly. We wanted to create an expereince in which the viewer intentionally smells (breaths) something which might make you sick. We added the onion to simulate the sensation of discomfort that comes with allergies, for those who do not have them. 

Alternatives

Our first idea was to create a table of specimens to be viewed visually. However, as we developed our concept, we thought a board hanging at head hight would lend itself better to the sense of smelling.  Learnings Beginning from a broad brief, the word flora, we manage to narrow it down to a workable concept. We did a quick brainstorm session where each of us has written some ideas about what to explore in the realm of flora. Listening to eachother and play with the ideas we were able to come up with a workable concept, the birth of this project.

I just love looking at his little face 😍 I got zero sleep last night because he cried all night 😞 So I got home early to help him calm down and he felt a little better. I tried to take a nap with him but that was not really on his agenda because he woke up ten minutes later demanding a change of clothing (he kept trying to take off his sleeper 😤) so Lily picked him out a shirt that was perfectly fitting, “My bad, were you sleeping?” 🤣 I took a shower to try to calm my back down and I get out to a poop-covered baby, Alex, and bed. Awesome. Back in the shower we go 🙄#motherhood #iwasnotprepared #itsmells #boymomlife #teethingsucks PS I made ribs last night that I didn’t get to eat because cranky boy, so we ate them for lunch today. I didn’t get to pack a lunch this morning or anything 😂 This morning was whack.
