On Knowing How To Do Things (Specifically Being Artistic)
I've been drawing for years. It's established that that's pretty much my thing- that's what I'm good at and that's what I like doing. Without it, my life is pointless and my further existence on this planet ceases to continue having purpose or meaning to me. Now, that may sound really dramatic, but I'm completely serious. If I don't have an art project or I feel uninspired for whatever reason, I don't care about life. At all.
So it would stand to reason that if my life revolved that much around what art project I was currently working on that I would be sure to have plans or at least ideas about what I was going to work on next. And that is completely accurate. I usually have at least a few future projects mapped out in my mind, or written down somewhere so that I don't forget.
"Where are you going with this?" you ask. Here's where: Ever since I began drawing and painting, people have been harassing me about drawing stuff for them or saying "Oh, you should draw _____". I HATE THIS SO MUCH. Seriously people! I have so many other things I would rather be drawing than some random thing for you! And do you understand exactly how much time and effort I put into everything I work on? (Granted, I have drawn and painted some pieces that didn't take that long, but those are usually the ones that I want to draw the most and I end up completing in a day or two.) Not to be Mr. Selfish here, but do you really think that I'm going to spend 30+ hours of my time, not to mention however much effort I'm going to put into it just because you want a picture of some car, or goth Emma Watson? DO IT YOURSELF, GOSH DANG. I'm not your personal go-to commission artist. I don't even do commissions; they take all the fun out of it. And moreover, I already have a crap ton of things I want to make. I'm not going to prioritize your random whim over a heap of things that I actually want to do.
I don't make art to please the masses- I do it for myself, because without it, I would go insane. I pour my soul into my work and I don't care if anyone else likes it. If they happen to, that's just fine, but that's by no means the goal. If I were to start drawing or painting things for other people for the sole purpose of pleasing them, I would be completely compromising my beliefs while simultaneously making the whole endeavor pointless and (not so) slightly horrible for me.
And all this is without the kicker that if you make anything for anyone, everyone now expects it for themselves. It might not be so terrible to draw something for a friend if I really like the idea, but if that becomes known to anyone, endless harassment and expectation from everyone else will undoubtedly ensue.
GAH, WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST LEAVE ME ALONE WITH MY ART?!
/Rant over.
So how was your day?
Rabbit from Steam Powered Giraffe, of course. I have a whole new appreciation for Bunny's uncanny face painting talents o.o
