Five ships for the trope thing. Steve/Bucky, Sam/Steve, Harry/Draco, Ginny/Luna, Parker/Hardison/Elliot. And a bonus one because I'm obsessed and have no idea if you know it, let alone like it: Quentin/Eliot from The Magicians

Steve/Bucky is missing a journalism au imo. Picture it: Steve is working at a big name newspaper these days but then he finds out the guy he used to write Big Ideas articles with for his college newspaper back in the day has turned up working for Fox. Turns out, Bucky is super undercover doing a book project and Steve might mess it all up but showing up to “save” him from what is, admittedly, a terrible no good very bad job.

Sam/Steve has too many roadtrips and not enough nesting. I always want to read Sam and Steve getting therapy animals and baking. Just. All the time. I want them to have throw pillows and a hammock out back. Just. Everybody be nice to them all the time.

Harry/Draco is obvs the rival co-anchors I already said, but also just about every hallmark film plot ever. Are there no aus in this ship or have i just not found them yet???? Where are the dog walker fics and the coffeeshops and the academia aus????

Ginny/Luna: I have not read a single one yet. Send me recs STAT. But I can just picture all of it: Ginny, swol and athletic; Luna, no slouch but she ain’t no professional athlete and girl likes her books, you know what I’m saying. I know Luna becomes an explorer/naturalist in the books, but also, she is definitely going to lose her fool mind because Ginny could probably smash a watermelon between her thighs.

Parker/Hardison/Elliot needs, first of all, like A THOUSAND MORE FICS. Some of these ships are like, ok, you are missing this one trope. PEOPLE. This one needs ALL THE TROPES. Are they jedi??? are they in starfleet??? are they maquis pulling a con on starfleet??? are they running rival ice cream parlors kitty corner from each other where they glower at each other for months, each trying new tactics to steal customers from the other two??? We need them all. So many fic. We need them. DO IT FOR THE PEOPLE, PEOPLE.

If you were to write about how post-second-war mental health is handled in the wizarding world what would that look like?

OK, so I have read a couple of fics where this is dealt with so that clouds my headcanons somewhat. But I think you’d have a lot of upheaval after this war, far more than after the first one. The first one seems like it was both longer and quieter. We know, for example, that the previous war went on long enough for there to be serious, scary Death Eaters almost from the moment Snape arrived in Hogwarts. We know that Tom Riddle was calling his followers Death Eaters before HE even left Hogwarts about 50 years before. And we know he was scary when he arrived to ask for the job from Dumbledore at some indeterminate middle point between. So that war was like the old saying about frogs being boiled where they don’t know they’re dying because the heat rises so gradually. And then it just....ended. Mysteriously and shrouded in controversy. So it was just, like, you were living on a hell planet and you didn’t know and then you just....went back to work the next day. 

But the second war is so short. It’s actually only like three years all told. Voldy comes back at the end of book 4 and you can’t really say the war began before that point (though Harry was living in his own war conditions both at the Dursleys’ and then because Voldy was waging specific war against him at Hogwarts). So it’s just the three years of Book 5-7. And the first year is like the first war----no one believes it’s happening and everything is covert. In fact, Dumbledore runs his Order as if it was the first war. He even taps all the same people and ignores that there’s a separate guerilla force that Harry started in a completely different style. 

(I could go on and on about the differences between Dumbledore’s Army and the Order. I really could. It’s so fascinating.)

But anyway. There’s no ignoring either what happens during the second war, or just going to work, or just picking up the pieces afterward. Everything has been shook to the very core. So I assume wizarding life would have to legit change. You’d also have the trio as key war heroes shaping post-war life and they would be SO MUCH BETTER than the previous era’s. Hermione has twice the heart that Dumbledore had and Harry has twice hers over again. There will be no rushed trials to send everyone to Azkaban because you can bet they’re going to dismantle Azkaban. And there will be no secret rushed trials at all because Hermione gets to re-write the justice system in her own image. 

So when it comes to mental health.....

Actually, I think that Harry couldn’t possibly be an Auror. It just strikes me as so very out of character. I could see him either as a teacher or starting a new branch of health services specifically to address trauma. And this is Harry starting it, the man who wanted to dig the grave for Dobby with his own two hands, so it wouldn’t be “wave a wand and now we assume you are fine.” This would be a mixture of magical and muggle mind healing. I wonder how a diagnostic spell would work with ADHD, for example? How different would it be if there was a way to just be absolutely sure of a diagnosis of, like, BPD or something else that frequently gets misdiagnosed? And the treatments would be long and involve a lot of introspection and honesty....which would not come easy to a society that thinks Neville’s parents and Lockhart belong on the same floor. I could see Harry really loving working on this long term. He likes long projects, after all.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT QUESTION. 

Like, does it have to be either/or???

Also imagine THAT boondoggle. For the first 5-10 years after both sides find out about each other, there’s just an ENORMOUS shuffle at the beginning of each school year as certain students turn out to be in the wrong school. It’s insane. Department secretaries in both institutions start a support group. there is a lot of heavy drinking, a lot of burn out. 

So it takes a LONG time for people to start realizing....some kids are both. An administrator has to be restrained when she realizes this, otherwise she may very well have destroyed the entire filing system in her rage. 

God, and just IMAGINE the academic conferences. Imagine the near-fistfights that would happen ON THE REGULAR at panels called things like “A Magical Scale: Mutants with Magic” etc???? And the talking heads sort of “specialist” who are aaaaalways debating the issue on tv on the 24-hr news channels????

The Tuners in NK Jemisin’s Stone Earth are autistic.

They have a flat affect and other characters assume they don’t have emotion and don’t assume the characters have competence outside their area of expertise.

The Tuners prefer non-verbal communication.

They are sensory defensive.

When they’re overwhelmed by sensory input they stim by looking at an amethyst. Characters also stim by hugging themselves, rocking, and flapping.

Their caretakers do not think of them as fully human and the tuners have to deal with how they feel about that.

Reading: I bought a small stack of used books from a yearly charity event and I sort of read/browse them all in random, nonlinear chunks. But mostly:

I sweep sun off the rooftops, by hanan al-shayk (scandalous short stories, Arab characters)

Things We Lost to the Water, Eric Nguyen (1st gen Vietnamese American brothers and their mother navigate life in New Orleans. And then Katrina happens.)

The Engineman’s Master Key (14th edition) from around 1915 (Literally an old steam engines manual. Fascinating.)

New Zealand Geographic (getting a magazine in the mail is honestly so nice).

Last series: Honestly? I recently binged Hazbin Hotel. Did I like it? No. This was the most recent example of why I don’t like watching a finished series: I sometimes feel like I can’t look away and I get stuck for hours.

Last movie: Paprika. I’ve been meaning to watch it for over 15 years! I heard about it before Inception and I saw the Japanese novel in a library in Kyoto, but I finally saw it. Yes, Inception absolutely used scenes from Paprika.

Last song: I haven’t been listening to much because I can’t wear my headphones until my rook piercing heals up a bit more. But I’ve been obsessed with THOT SQUAD (aka BLVCK BUNNIE), Moonchild Sanelly, and the latest releases from Chrissy Chlapecka.

Sweet or salty: It is an affront before God to divide these two. I reject this premise.

Coffee or tea: Lately it’s coffee because my flatmate is on a hyper-fixation so coffee is free! But if I have actual money, I go for Hulucat’s rose milk tea.

Working on:

Another novel-length fic, this time in the IDW run of Transformer’s comics. They put out a series called More Than Meets the Eye and it’s extremely neurodiverse and extremely queer. And I’m obsessed because of course I am. It ticks all my boxes. The fic is a throwback to my love of action/adventure but with a “hidden” Indigenous agenda. I say hidden, but it’s very clear by the 4th chapter if you’re familiar with Indigenous challenges.

Going back to Japan, I guess. I’m planning on staying for a year because AI disrupted my tech career and I’ve been unemployed for quite a while now.
